Details:
I started,as did many people, playing in rock bands, initially playing electric guitar, keyboards and bass. My frustration with the band concept grew to the point where I wanted to work as a solo musician. This came to be possible when I acquired the equipment that would allow me to take the compositions from the ground up, which meant the programming of almost all the sounds on the CD and a home based studio which would permit the freedom to indulge experimentation without the worry of time or cost.
I have never sought to "sound" like anyone else. Rather, I have tried to affect the listener in the same way that other music has affected myself. For instance, if you have listened to Steve Roach, or Brian Eno, you may well have noticed that their music can be listened to on many different levels, or that it literally takes you "into" yourself. This is not navel gazing; rather, it is using the world of sound to cause introspection and is, at the same time, something that is very wholistic.
There is no reason that electronic sounds have to sound trite or boring. With the power of today's synthesizers, the only restrictions on their capabilities has to do with limitations in the users. That being said, it does take great amounts of work to program sounds that have organic elements, musical usefulness, and unique characteristics. I think one of the great joys of being a composer in the 21st century has to do with the sense that there is an infinity to the nature of what one can do now and that one has complete autonomy over all aspects of one's work. The only limitations are self-imposed.
These compositions sometimes use ethnic modalities, in the harmonic sense, but they are used only as starting points. Part of my objective was to create atmopheres that transport the listener to other places. I have always disliked the moniker "New Age" as it connotates a certain number of things that I have no affinity towards, and feel no connection with. My music should be in the electronic category, but in a genre encompassing many words, such as classical, world, jazz, film. I hope that you will listen to the CD and use it as a soundtrack for your own imagination, a "Sonic Dreamtime".
I am in the process of setting up a website and the address inside the CD liner is no longer applicable, so if you want to contact me for any reason, please use the email address. Thanks, and happy listening.
