True to the spirit of minimal artists like J.J. Cale, Mose Allison, and Randy Newman, the songs on SEED ON THE WIND were recorded in one take, either with an arch-top guitar and vocals, or a 10-foot grand piano with vocals, or a Korg OASYS with vocals. A slide guitar was added on a few cuts, as well as a classical guitar and distorto guitar in one instance. The material deals with love, beauty, distance, growing older, reassurance, escape, searching for a home, and terrorism, with a warmth that never descends into sentimentality, and rides on solid, smooth grooves where there is a rhythm section. The single instrument songs seem to float in an understated jazz sensibility, and the single guitar song rolls like a tumbleweed over an open prairie with lyrics of love, loss, and endurance Hemingway would have been proud of. The vocals, it has been remarked, are like a male Sade, with a smokey, turn-down-the-lights feel filling out a sensual sound experience easily listened to time and time again.
