Woodward and Gittings
Woodward and Gittings is a project created by Paul Woodward and Brian Gittings. Paul and Brian met in Los Angeles in 1996 while Paul Woodward was in Los Angeles via Dublin, Ireland developing the beginnings of his then project âThe Marigoldsâ. Brian was brought in to play guitar for a short period. It turns out that the marigolds would need to return to Ireland and without Brian. However Brian and Paul remained in touch over the years. In 1998 Brian Gittings moved to Ireland and once again joined with The Marigolds. This second attempt was also short lived, but the relationship between the two did not suffer. Brian and Paul spent many nights listening and discussing and sharing music and musical ideas. It was said at this time by Paul âone day we should get together and make a recordâ. In 1999 Brian returned to Los Angeles to start the group âRAULâ myspace/raultheband. During this period Paul and Brian werenât in touch so often. In 2003 Brian and RAUL booked an Irish winter tour bringing Brian back to Ireland for the first time in 5 years. This was the reunions that put Brian and Paul back in touch and eventually lead to the old idea of making that record once discussed so many years ago. It was arranged that Paul would fly out to Los Angeles and spend the first few months of 2005 to record and album. They started in recording in March a month after originally thought because the United States immigration authority would not let Paul into the country. He eventually made but only after surviving a potentially fatal emergency landing of his flight. The recording process was lasted for two months and it took place in a shed in Brianâs backyard.
Brian and Paul are both multi instrumentalists and played many instruments on the record, but they also tapped into a local pool of musicians in and around the Claremont area of Los Angeles. Raulâs Charles Maxey made an appearance on drums as well as Mike Green, an up and coming LA session player on drums. Local folk hero Henry Barnes (Amps for Christ) and his Brother Rufie Barnes also lent there talents on the recording playing Double Bass, electric sitar, mountain dulcimer, lap slide guitar, fiddle, and vocals. Also in the mix on brass were Frank Meskimen (one drop redemption) and Kenny Auyeung a prominent up and coming jazz saxophonist. On percussion was Claremontâs notorious Chris Hatter (everyone).
At the end of May 2005 time had run out and Paul had to return home. They had managed to finish the recording part of the project the mixing, mastering and art work were left to be completed. It would not be until June of 2006 that Brian would make the journey to Ireland to work on the final bits of the record. In five weeks Paul and Brian managed to work it out and now they have it available to you. This record was created with the hard earned dollars of Woodward and Gittings as well as many favors from the extra musicians and close friends.
