I created Happy Birthday Jesus because I wanted children to know the true meaning of Christmas: a celebration of the birth of Jesus. What better way to help them appreciate that than by portraying Christmas as one big global birthday party.

After a short introduction that introduces children to the comparison of Christmas to their own birthday parties, the CD follows the story of the birth of Jesus. It starts with the song 2000 Candles. Every birthday needs a cake and Jesus' birthday cake has 2000 Candles. Next comes Mary and the Angel which tells of the angel visiting Mary and is followed by Mary's Song, a version of the magnificat sung by my daughter Hannah when she was 9 years old. We Three Kings is a bit of fun but also provides an explanation as to what the gifts the three wise men bring to Jesus signify. This is followed by No Rooms Today. Not much is said in the Gospels about Joseph but I always thought he had a special place in the story. As a father, I can't begin to imagine what he went through, travelling so far with a pregnant wife riding a donkey in the middle of winter only to find that there are no rooms available and that they would have to sleep in a stable. The Shepherd Boy is a short story of an angel speaking to the shepherd boy, again a bit of fun. When Jesus Was Born invites children to imagine how it was to be born in a stable without all the comforts and items that we associate with babies. The CD then concludes by coming back to the birthday party theme with Happy Birthday Jesus which is a party celebration. There are also backing tracks which can be used in classrooms and church services.

The CD features the children of St Bernards Primary School Bacchus Marsh who sing on a number of tracks and which will provide children listening to the songs with an instant appeal and asscoiation. The narration by myself and Christine Hall also guides children through the story helping them to understand the significance of each part of the story. Happy Birthday Jesus is a lot of fun but also provides children with the opportunity to reflect on and appreciate the true meaning of Christmas.
