Bio of
Will Willis
SINGER SONGWRITER
ACOUSTIC GUITAR & LEAD VOCALS
FULL NAME: Will Jackson Willis
BORN: March 14th, 1980
Lenoir, North Carolina
MUSICAL INFLUENCES: Damien Rice, The Dave Matthews Band, Radiohead, Phish,The Grateful Dead, Fiona Apple, Nick Drake, Bela Fleck, John Mayer, Coldplay, Miles Davis, James Taylor, Coletrain, James Brown, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper and many other artists and genres.
BACKGROUND: I started playing guitar and singing at the age of 17 with a big influence from The Dave Matthews band and my brother Ben. I quickly started writing my own tunes trying to find my own voice and style for years to come. I moved to Wilmington, N.C. to become a student at The University of North Carolina at Wilmington. I soon gathered my first of several bands in the end my freshman year called
Breaking Light. I had a couple other bands during my time at the Coast as well.
Tchaka - Jam/Funk/Reggae/Rock - Mostly Originals (Santana, Marley, etc.)
The Deep Woods Project - trio of songwriters (all originals from each artist)
I graduated from UNC Wilmington with a degree in Leisure Service Management and Tourism in December 2004. Drawn by the energy of the Appalachian Mountains and the love of friends and family I returned home after graduation to pursue my music career and help my family in the revitalization of downtown Lenoir. (Hogwaller Marketplace). After a show at a local spot in Lenoir called Berkley's Corner I received and offer from a local contributor to make my first full length album. "Along That Road" After spending May of 2005 through November of 2005 on the project, I released "Along that Road" a 12 song - 1 hour compilation of tunes that I have written about my personal endeavors and opinions of our world over the past several years . So far I have had a great response to the album and am in the process of creating demos for the second release.
FUTURE PLANS: I hope to continue down the path of music for a good while. I am currently looking for sources to get air-play on some independent radio stations, expand the fan base and venture out a little further away from home. My goal in this profession is to create music that helps people relate with the problems they may face in everyday life and in the world in which we live. My dream is to create as long as I am able, play historic theaters and be untouched by the corruption of money. I love to write songs and play in front of people. I feel like it is the gift I have been blessed with and feel passionate about making it work. My father has given me a good motto to live by "If you are not creating, you are destroying."
