Making Southern Hemisphere
This group of songs could not have come together if it hadn't been for the encouragement of Beau Young and accidental inspiration by Jack and Kim Johnson and the characters surrounding them.
When Beau decides he is going to do something he is tireless, almost obsessed. His natural talent and crazy drive push him into a daily routine that is hard not to get swept up in if you spend any time with the guy. Two world longboard championships under his belt and now its time for some
music!!
Way before I recorded Southern Hemisphere Beau decided he was going to make a surf film and include a track of mine....which didn't exist yet...It was that faith and encouragement that drove me to make it happen...huge thanks to Beau!!
Check out my favorite Beau Young song featured on the WEEKEND SESSIONS compilation album!
I have been lucky enough to cross paths with Jack and Kim a number of times in different parts of the world. They have a calm spirit that radiates. Some people just make you feel at home wherever you are. What Jack does is real and I'm glad that people can see that. Merlo, Jack's bass player gave me some advice,...."If you sit down with an acoustic guitar and play your songs to your family and they sound good, then they're keepers".....sounded like good advice to me.
Southern Hemisphere was recorded on an old Yamaha nylon string guitar that has been sitting in our house in Byron Bay ever since I could remember. "The family guitar" has seen many bonfire beach parties.
Summer 2003 Florida. Jim Devito's studio in Crescent Beach. Most everything was recorded except drums. Jim decided to ask his friend Stan Lynch to play on a few tracks. I had never met Stan but had heard about him for years. He
was the drummer for Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers, played with Bob Dylan and was inducted into the Rock n' Roll hall of Fame!! I was a little nervous to say the least.
Stan showed up. Listened to the first track (Break me Down) for about 20 seconds and said..."ok I've got it, lets go!" Straight to the box of odd percussion pieces consisting of bits of metal, wood, bells, old hunks of plastic etc. He spreads them all over the floor and yelled to Jim to hit
play!
Three minutes later he was done and asked what was next. Stans timing is so on its scary. Unfortunately as it does in summer in Florida a huge thunderstorm swept through so we had to shut down the studio for a few hours, but it was nice to talk and hear some stories from this guy. Stan played on three songs.
Jim has another good drummer friend, George Sluppick. This guy is so cool! He plays some beautiful brushes and has become a good friend. George played on seven songs. He is currently the drummer for an amazing band, Mofro.
