Fusion Review

Fusion is the title of the new CD by flutist Jill Felber and pianist Dianne Frazer. These two stellar musicians have blended, on every track, two pieces of music, classical and non-classical. One of my favorites is their fusion of The Prayer by David Foster with the Rachmaninoff Vocalise. I also loved the combination of Richard Strauss' Morgen with Ian Clarke's Orange Dawn. But deepest to my heart is the arrangement of the aria Lascia ch'io pianga from Handel's opera Rinaldo followed by the Faure Morceau de Concours. I heard Jill and Dianne perform the Handel alone as an encore at their recital at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore in February, 2010, and went slightly crazy. I got on my knees and begged these two amazing musicians to record this stirring, luscious, heart-opening arrangement. I guess they caved in to my pitiful supplications. :)
This entire recording is relaxing, peaceful, serene, calming. Jill Felber, among the most elite of our flutists, and Dianne Frazer, among the most elite of our pianists, have enjoyed friendship together for twenty-five years, and their lifelong collaboration of single-minded precision, interpretation and phrasing can be perceived here, just as it can at their live performances. I love it when classical musicians at the top of their game break out their creativity and produce innovative recordings like this that embrace a variety of musical styles.

I bought four copies from Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company: one for myself and three for former students. Two of them are in graduate school (one in flute and one in French) and need some soothing music (!), and one is in yoga teacher training - this would be a great CD for all kinds of relaxation/meditative/massage/etc. activities.

A beautiful flute CD to give as a gift or keep for yourself....or both! :)
