Pattern for a lovely Titanic Era filet crochet baby afghan featuring bluebirds.
This baby blanket matches the Infant Bluebird Sacque and Cap crochet pattern that we also offer.
This very sweet little design from 1916 can be left open and airy or lined (as directed in the original pattern) or satin.
Materials--7 balls Bear Brand Ladyfair, White; 1 ball Bear Brand Ladyfair, Blue or Pink; 1 crochet hook, No. 0; Messaline (lightweight, soft, shiny silk cloth with a twilled or satin weave) yardage for lining and shirred edge; narrow lace or fancy braid; narrow ribbon for rosette bow.
This is a great pattern with very good instructions. It begins with the general filet crochet directions:
"The filet crochet consists of spaces and blocks and is done entirely in chain and double crochet. A space in this pattern is 1 dc, ch 2, skip 2 stitches, 1 dc in next stitch. This forms a perfect square. In making rows of spaces, the dc is always made on top of dc in preceding row. A block is 1 dc on dc in row below, 1 dc in each of the next 2 stitches, 1 dc on next dc. In making two or more blocks, the first consists of 4 dc, as just described, the following ones of 3 dc, the final dc always over a dc of preceding row. When starting a row with a block, always ch 3 and when starting with a space, ch 5. The work must be done firmly.
Written instructions are given through Row 11 and then it directs:
"Continue working the border, as directed, and the bird pattern according to chart. When last row is made, the afghan should measure 29 inches."
Gauge with yarn and hook suggested is about 8 dc to the inch.
The pattern includes a nice size, clear filet crochet chart, as well as instructions for straightening or blocking, edging and trimming the afghan. This is a republished pattern in the English language that has been retyped from my old original. The pattern has been proof read by at least two experienced crocheters.
The pattern is in an Adobe pdf file that you can view on your computer (Mac or PC) and print with Adobe Reader, which is a free download at www.adobe.com
