Daisy Chain's swift and rapid advancement in the Detroit music circuit was nothing short of phenomenal. Their influence, unique style, and significant impact on other artists have placed them in the forefront with the very best. The only exhortation in this letter is to increase the public's exposure to this truly great band. Although recorded in 1997, I assure you, that their sound is fresh and alive, and will help set a precedence in an international music revival.
Let me give you some background on the band: All of the guys in the band hail from Berkeley, MI., a Detroit suburb notorious as a despot of conservatism. Inspired by pure passion and love of music, the right-wing tyranny of their home town did not dispirit them, but, drove them to an unduly obsession--a need to convey their ideals through their songs. Jerry Falwell will be repelled, but, Dostoevsky would glow with pride.
Domingo Corpus (Mingo), the band's bassist, has immense instrumental talent. Daisy Chain's promotional manager and comrade, Mitchell Hicks, commented on Mingo's exceptional musicianship, " Ming is the most versatile player around--I'd put him up against anyone--he's a genius--really.". Mingo has an uncanny adroitness for musical arrangement, as guitarist Steve will attest: "Its just unbelievable, that guy can take a two-chord progression and turn it into an orchestration--fuckin' unbelievable!".
Lorenzo Gonzalez, who is Mingo's cousin, is the band's percussionist, and an indefatigable driving force. Unmatched, with pounding synchronicity, he is the hardest working and most dedicated member. Mingo commented on his cousin's fanatical devotion to music: " If that cat could play in his sleep, he would.", further adding, " He came outta' the womb jammin'! I have never played with a drummer who took such unbridled interest in his performance, he is absolutely purgatorial to play with--he keep's you clean.".
Steven Tarnowsky (Steve) is the guitarist and founder of the group, and has been playing with Mingo for years. Steve is the prime contributor of the rhythmic structure of the songs, and his mellow-sweetened voice greatly enhances the vocal harmonies. Lead singer Osco reflects back, "That guy handles himself both in the studio and on stage with Ghandi-like grace. He continues to prove that he is a creative and competent musician all the way around."
Lead singer, Osco Ruffolo, whose various aliases we do not wish to divulge, is the most recent addition to the band. Osco drifted in and out of myriad bands before teaming up with Daisy Chain. Osco's operatic voice and flamboyant stage antics spearhead Daisy Chain's fierce sound. Although each member equally contributes in the composition of the songs, Osco is the primary lyricist. Mingo was initially pensive about Osco's dour, and sometimes tragically humorous poetry: " At first, I was somewhat appalled by the darkness, but, I eventually saw the light.".
Just as each member of Daisy Chain is complex and diverse, so is their music, with its rich, eclectic texture, brilliant arrangement, and profound intensity. To appreciate Daisy Chain, one must have a lust for spice and an affinity for hedonism. Daisy Chain strongly exudes a zest for life: The sirenic rhythms of 'Kala', the forbidden, clandestine seduction of 'Starlight', and the decadent hopelessness of 'Fade Away', manifest the sensuality that is an intrinsic element in the band's music. Society, spiritism, and politics are issues of strong concernment: The jovial scoffing of our judicial system in 'Sanction Man'; the tragic satire of 'Swine'; the crude, unveiling honesty in ''72 L.T.D.'; the stark introspect of 'Scenic Route'; the intense melancholy of 'Over'. Daisy Chain has garnered and displayed a variable bouquet of ideals, in full paradoxical grandeur. Daisy Chain holds the auspices of diversity and experimentation in high regard, and their music proves it.
A great many ameliorations are occurring in Detroit, and a full renaissance is inevitable. Daisy Chain has contributed greatly to the recent development in the city, and continues to aid in its cultural resurrection. There is no doubt that they are going to sweep the nation, and then the world. As for the name?-Like it?
