Drawing on early inspiration from their native Manchester, much of the sonic signature of The Amber Tapes involves organically layered textures; manipulating sounds to the point of distress, often removing obvious instrument references. These tracks explore the relationship between mood, time and place, typically using low-level field recordings to provide a spatial reference. The results are a series of dark intricately-detailed cinematic soundscapes, âmusic for cult B-movies that have yet to be madeâ.

The creative process is always random; sound sources are switched on, played live, interleaved with fragments of recorded noise, gradually building up and stripping back until a structure emerges. Sounds are drawn from an eclectic range of vintage analog and modular synthesizers, acoustic piano, virtual instruments, guitars, and splices of tape pushed through stacks of effects processors. The beauty of using old analog sources is that much of this can never be reproduced quite the same way - mistakes often form an integral part of the fabric.

The Amber Tapes have a number of multi-media projects and collaborations planned for 2012, and continue to expand and explore new sonic territory.
