Details:
Seven years as a labor of love, praise and meditation, this CD includes original and traditional chants in praise of The Lord of the Universe (Haidakhandi Bhagwan AKA Babaji) using mantras learned at His ashram in the foothills of the Himalayas. All tracks are preceded by clips of Babaji Himself speaking or chanting. Duty Banau (Do Your Duty) has a world beat flavor featuring a didgeridoo, African udu drum and soaring sax solos. Haidakhandi Bhagwan has a reggae vibe featuring horn sections and hot timbale fills. Jagadambe Ma has a jazz/hip hop flavor featuring tenor sax, funky beats and a shredding guitar. Shiva Shankara is reincarnated as a hot dance tune, complete with filter sweeps, trumpet solos, incredible horn sections and a vocal chorale. The CD ends with a bonus track of afternoon chanting in the presence of Babaji. (When the ashram bells ring is when He comes in.)
Haidakhan Babaji
There is an archetype Father. Lord of All. We are blessed with His embodiment from time to time: Truth, Simplicity, Love. In His Presence there is no question of belief. There is only Now, and then what Now is bringing next. Your life is changed forever.
He is known by many namesâthe most well-known is Babaji. His main teaching is to repeat a mantra in between all your other thoughts whenever you remember. It is a life-changing practice that keeps you focused in Spirit.
The mantra is âOm Namah Shivaya.â It means, âI bow down to God,â or, âI surrender to God.â Always a good thing to remember when things arenât going well. Babaji said just repeat it inside all the time. He said itâs an ancient mantra and the most powerful one. I tried it and now I can only sing His praises.
He taught us to stay active: âA lazy man is a dead man.â He taught âUnity through Diversity.â He said that for the sincere seeker, all religions get to the same place. Early in 1984, just before he left His body, He told us,
âLove and serve all humanity. Help everyone. Be happy, be courteous. Be a dynamo of irrepressible joy. Recognize God and goodness in every face. There is no saint without a past and no sinner without a future. Praise everyone. If you cannot praise them, let them out of your life. Be original. Be inventive. Be courageous. Take courage again and again. Do not imitate, be strong, be upright. Do not lean on the crutches of others. Think with your own head. Be yourself. All perfection and every divine virtue are hidden in you. Reveal them to the world. Wisdom too, is already within you. Let it shine forth. Let the Lordâs grace make you free. Let your life be that of the rose: In silence, it speaks the language of fragrance.â
Haidakhan Bhagwan is one of His Names. It means âGod of Earth, Air, Water and Fireâ or âLord of the Universe.â
Most call Him Babaji. He is Everywhere. He is NoOne and NoThing. He said âOm Namah Shivayaâ or âOm Namaha Shivaiâ are his phone numbers. If you repeat them enough, you may get an email from Him, among other miracles.
The four chants on the CD are Duty Banau, Haidakhandi Bhagwan, Jagadambe Ma and Shiva Shankara. These chants are followed by a bonus track of Afternoon Chanting at Babaji's ashram that gives you a taste of the environment in which I learned to sing these mantras.
Om Shanti translates Babaji telling us "Duty Banau" or "Do Your Duty" in the intro to the first chant.
Jagadambe Ma means Universal Mother. All the words in this chant are names of the Universal Mother. Put everything that âwomanâ is to you into one mental focus. Let Her break your heart open as you sing Her names in praise for what She gives us.
Shiva Shankara and Shiva Maheshwara are more names for God. Sukha Kara Dukha Hara means âYou Reap What You Sow.â Like when you sow Godâs Name as: OM NAMAHA SHIVAI...
The chants were created by Seth Bartlett AKA Dhyana Yogi except Shiva Shankara, which retains the melody we sang at Babaji's ashram. To add some harmonic movement to this simple melody, Philip Nakano provided a new harmonic arrangement around the melody, which is supported in particular by the electric bass and horns.
Philip also played Flute, Saxophones, overdubbed all the Brass Sections, and in addition, played Udu, Timbales, Djembe, Congas, Percussion and Electric Bass. The Trumpet on Shiva Shankara is by Jeff Hume.
Vocals, Keyboards, Beats, Loops, Editing, Comping and Mix Automation are by Seth Bartlett.
Backing vocals on Jagadambe Ma & Shiva Shankara are by Shanti Supernant.
Recordings of Babaji in Haidakhan are by Leonard Orr (May 1980).
Organ on Shiva Shankara is by Jim Bergquist.
Electric & Acoustic Guitars are by Yusuf Kilgore.
Fender Stratocaster during the breakdown on Shiva Shankara is by James Ennis.
