Gas prices in the United States are at an alarming rate these days. In some parts of the country, consumers are paying $3 to $4 a gallon. This can be devastating to people who depend on their cars for their livelihoods. It can put a huge dent in a familys budget and cause a real hardship.

Plus, with the rising price of gas, we have to consider the effect on our consumer goods as well. Trucking companies must pay more in fuel costs, and the only way for them to recoup any of that money and make even a small profit is to pass the increased cost on to the consumer. That means higher prices for things like groceries, clothing and other things we need and use every day.

But there is hope on the horizon. Scientists are developing alternative fuels that can help not only the environment, but also the consumers checkbook. The new alternative fuels offer advantages in so many ways that people are really starting to take a look at these as an option over paying astronomical gasoline prices.

Unlike back in the 1970′s when there was a gas shortage invoking memories of long lines at gas stations, we have plenty of gasoline. But the prices are what is of concern today. Many people blame the high price of gas on our ongoing war in the Middle East, but actually a majority of the oil we use to manufacture gasoline is obtained from Venezuela. The rise in price probably has more to do with the large federal, state and local taxes levied on each gallon of gas we pump.

Whatever the cause, the fact of the matter is that the development of these new alternative fuels helps consumers in so many ways.
