This band has been at it, up to it and all about it for a good long while. It's all groove all the time. It's instrumental now, so don't look for a singer to tell you what. Don't start sayin' jazz either. We leave that up to the college kids. And please... Smooth what?! Acid who?! Spare us, we're far too excitable and unkempt to make that much money. Now if you mention funky music, then we can have a conversation. If you say all-the-way-live-booty-shakin-boogaloo-house-party where the host just might make rent - then it must be Friday night and it must be Dr. Ketchup on the bandstand. Technically speaking, one of our favorite things to do with music is to take jazz standards (or any style music for that matter) and drive them with a fiercely aligned funk feel.

We generally play out with a core instrumentation of Fender Rhodes, tenor saxophone, bass and drums. This keeps us lean. Make no mistake, many Philly musicians have worked with Dr Ketchup as a standing member or just to sit in for a gig. When we can afford it, we'll add vibes and percussion. Sometimes we'll simply fill out the horns with a trumpet player... that is, when they decide to honor us with their presence. But for the most part, the four piece is loaded with soul. The thing I always loved about playing with Dr. Ketchup is that we set up and groove. Two people or 200. Friday in our favorite nightspot or playing for 13 year olds at a Bar Mitzvah, it's stuff we dig playing so it always feels good. Of course we all listen to plenty of Herbie, Lou Donaldson, Monk and Miles, but if I had to neatly file it away, I would say we call on the Boogaloo beats from the late 60's to get us to our sound.

We've been playing in the city for the past 10 years. In that time we've played just about every bar, juke joint, fly-by-night-spot, third floor walk-up, back yard bar-b-que, night club and showroom in town that features live music. We've always enjoyed playing and being a part of area festivals including "Penn Rocks the Homeless", "Clark Park Summer Festival" "The Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival" in New York City and "The Delaware Ice Cream Festival". In the same breath we can proudly say that we were recently on a gig sponsored by Modern Drunkard Magazine. We worked The Trocadero opening for Groove Collective as well as The Greyboy Allstars and Robert Walter's Second Congress at the Khyber. Dr. Ketchup has also put time in on collaborative efforts with G. Love & Special Sauce and King Britt. We got our Ivy vibe on and we played an 88.5 WXPN broadcast on a program called "Live From the Writers House" a program devoted to music and poetry. Sometimes we open, sometimes we headline. Like the kids say, "it's all good". Currently, we can most often be found on a monthly rotation at the Tritone at 15th and South Streets. Come check us out. We love you already.
