COUNTRY: Traditional Country, GOSPEL: Country Gospel
Details:
I come from a long line of musical talent from both of my parents families. I was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, where as a toddler, I would play on my mother's pots and pans. I started playing the drums in my parent's church at the age of five. I played the drums while my mother, Garnita, played the piano and sang in church. I had a great ear for music and could keep a beat on fast and slow songs. As I got into my teen years, I quit singing and started playing the bass guitar. I visited many small churches and nursing homes with my mother and grandmother. We enjoyed playing for others, I loved to see the joy and excitement we brought to others and the feeling I got in return.
Many times I played and sang with friends all night long. I loved music. I began to write songs, both Gospel and Country & Western. During the Persian Gulf War, my dad, Barney, a friend, Bobby Moffit, Jr and I wrote a patriotic song âSheâs Worth Fighting Forâ and everyone who heard it enjoyed it. A congressman in Texas received a copy of the song and sent it to President George Bush, Sr. We received a good response from the White House. It was also played in many radio stations in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
I heard about a place called Johnny Highâs Country Music Review in Haltom City, Texas. My mother and father drove me 150 miles to the audition, where were many people waiting to perform. When it was my turn, I sang a Merle Haggard song with the house band for an audience of over 1000. After a couple of weeks waiting for the results of the audition, I received a letter from Johnny Highâs Country Music Review. I was chosen as a finalist and asked to sing for the next several weekends. This would have involved many trips and overnight stays. I wasn't able to afford it, so I had to put my dreams on hold once again.
I ran across a great steel guitar player who played at the Texas Steel Guitar Association Jamboree, and he took an interest in my talents. He owned his own radio station in east Texas where he held weekly talent contents. I won the opportunity to sing and DJ on his show at the radio station. I thought this would give me an opportunity to learn more about the music world which I had grown to love. After time, I realized that I needed to move on.
At a singing contest, one of the contestants told me about a man who was into music and the movies. This man, Happy Shahan from Brackettville, Texas, enjoyed my singing and put me to work as a regular singer/actor. I was intrigued by the many great recording artists and actors, I met while being managed by Mr. Shahan.
Circumstances in life took me back to my hometown. I was still not totally satisfied with what life had handed me. I felt robbed of my true dream of performing and singing for the world.
Time has passed and I still enjoy singing for churches and family. One night after singing in a 2500 seat capacity church auditorium, a man approached me about a great country gospel song he had written. The song was titled âHe Loves the Country in Meâ. The songwriter, Dave L. Cleveland, has been in the music industry his entire life. He is great friends with the legendary Roy Clark and many other entertainers to numerous to name. Dave has managed other music artists and took them to the top of the music industry. We have released our first CD, âWithout Youâ. While recording, it was said that Daveâs song and my voice were a perfect union. With my loving wife, Gloria, and my family at my side we look forward to seeing you soon in your hometown. We have a new sound to offer in real Country Christian Music. I hope the world will be blessed and encouraged by these songs.
God Bless
