Peter van Onselen, an ex South African Air Force pilot, starts an air charter company with a fellow pilot. Their friendship was born during the Angolan-South African War, a war that continues to rage on, despite a peace accord. Other than removing both the South Africans and Cubans from the conflict, the peace accord finally signed between these countries and the two Angolan rebel movements is ineffectual. Now a civilian, Van Onselen keeps his charter business going by piloting clandestine and highly dangerous, but well-paid, single missions: he makes his money by flying cargo planes loaded with medical supplies, weapons of war and no-questions-asked material into southern Angola, a UNITA stronghold. Returning from just such a flight, the aircraft is shot down in Angola, catches fire and burns. Van Onselen has two passengers, and the three barely escape with their lives. The courier is carrying a briefcase containing millions in cash and rough diamonds from the rebel's mines in northern Angola for his boss Trichardt, and they bury this moments before being discovered. The courier steps on a landmine and is killed, but the two survivors claim in their debriefing that the case has been lost. They plan to return and collect it later. However, Trichardt is suspicious, and a cat and mouse game ensues. Who will get the diamonds? Will they live to enjoy their prize? The story races from South Africa to the Caymans, with the South African secret police and a major crime boss in the Caymans becoming actively involved in chasing them. Romance flares, and Van Onselen finds himself in a love triangle. Will he get both the right girl, and the diamonds? Or will it all slip through his hands?
