ROCK: Glam, ROCK: 60's Rock
Details:
The French singer-songwriter, Gil Rose made his musical début with the punk-rock'n'roll groups The Paralytics and The Bohemians. Rose had been originally attracted to, and influenced by, the Anglo-Saxon tradition as played by the likes of Alex Chilton, Suicide, The Kinks, T-Rex and The Velvet Underground. Eager for a different experience, he struck out on his own, giving his first solo concert in 1996. This was followed by a series of gigs in such diverse venues as the bars and squats of his new-found stamping-ground of Geneva. Then Rose began to look elsewhere for inspiration and found it in such french musicians as Nino Ferrer, Dutronc, and Ronnie Bird. Up to this point, Rose had been concentrating on writing his lyrics in English which certainly was a good exercise in rhythm but his new musical influences gave him a desire to try writing, in what he likes to call, The Original Version, thus helping him find a more personal tone. This passage led to a new period of prolific writing accumulating in a sizable repertoire of songs. To record these works it was quite natural for Rose to turn to the accomplices of his early days for support. We find jack O. Leroy, guitarist and vocalist, whose talents had previously been noted in albums by Drive Blind and Kevin K. There is Mat Mysterious, bassist, the Pop Sir of the band, who has also recorded with Drive Blind and another band, Via Romance. And last, but not least, Doc Poison, the man with the harmonica from Roseâs Paralytic days, who had performed with The Sonic Reducers and Mystery Girls as well.
In 2005, the band released their first album, Le Roi de Rien, (The King of nothing), rock purer than hard and slightly acid âpop ballads. Rose and his men had laid the foundations of their new style. Their regular collaboration transformed the group into a new collective adventure: Gil rose is dead. Long Live Gil rose et les Hydropathes. Le Roi de rien is warmly received, obtaining good write-ups in such publications as RockâNâFolk and Abus Dangereux. This is followed by a promotional tour, welding the four definitively together and leading to share the bill with some of their favourite bands including the Australian group, TNT. They participate in several tribute album : Trash Is Neat: Tribute to the Cramps; Tribute to Rowland S. Howard (Stagger Records); and not forgetting the record honouring Nikki Sudden which will be released in this year on Sunthunder Records.
In January 2007, Gil Rose and the Hydropathes launch their second album, Klondike. Seventeen tracks. No more. No less. From the raging and tormented rock of Rouge and of Tristesse; from the tense ballads such as Coquelicots de Mai and Le Bruit du Vent; to the unaffected love songs of Complainte and Deux Gouttes dâEau and the groovy sweets of La Messe est Dite and Le Songe Merveilleux - let it be said : there is something for everyone. The album, which rings to the sounds of Morricone as heard in Klondike and which is enhanced by the double-edged pop hymn, Tout Sera Rose, was produced by Charly Bogner, the shadow Hydropathe.
In the months to come, it is on stage that GR and his H intend to champion Klondike. Here. There. Everywhere. One word of advice - stay tunedâ¦.
