Far Yet Near is the first album by 18-year-old composer and pianist Harry Whitney. This inspired collaboration with renowned musicians Cory Combs, Whitneyâs teacher for four years, and Matt Aiken, led to an original and personal album of free jazz.
Consisting of 7 original compositions by Whitney and 5 trio improvisations, Far Yet Near explores spacious playing, bringing the music to life by letting it breathe as much as possible. Compositional playing is the driving concept behind this music. Group interaction was the main way of achieving this, using each otherâs space to create a vast and mature musical landscape that, at times, sounds like more then three musicians playing together.
The tracks on this album flow together, each one building up from each other to, by the culmination, give the listener a sense of completion. As the name suggests, often quiet and spacious music can sound distant. There is underlying warmth in Far Yet Near; a closeness and hopeful tone that one can relate to.
