Details:
"...(Hartmut Hillmann) is a very talented individual. He will contribute a great deal to the world of music!"
CHARLIE BANACOS, teaching guru and New England Conservatory Of Music / Boston

"... I´ve enjoyed listening to Your band´s recording. I think it´s really good and has some very interesting music on it..."
JIMMY HASLIP, YELLOWJACKETS

"(Illicit Poetry) has convinced us in a musical sense!..."
Ulrich Vormehr (EFA Medien)

"We here like the Illicit Poetry production exceptionally !..."
Bert Gerecht (Hot Wire Records)

"...I like (Illicit Poetry) very much...my colleagues appreciate your chops and the songs and were absolutely delighted"
Knut Schulze (SONY Records, Germany)

"Illicit Poetry plays Urban-Folk-Funk on a high energy level. The six-string bass-guitar with it´s expanded tone range is always there, without being too much up-front. Ideas are thrown from bass to keyboard and back, like in a ball-game, drums and percussion do archaic talking. Sometimes the music is crying and roaring, sometimes it's full of softness and subtility."
Martin Newman (SELF Records)

" ...The vibes are the featured instrument on this odd-meter jazz-funk disc, but lurking beneath it all is bassist Hillmann, who rips it up six-string-style!..."
SCOTT MALANDRONE , BASSPLAYER MAGAZINE (on ZABRISKIE POINT´s CD VIBRAZONE)

Uncivilized, about the CD:

The blessings of civilization are dubious in many aspects: Our planet is jeopardized more and more, not only by pollution and ecological damages, caused by an immeasurable greed for money and political domination, but by our disrespect for other (not only human) beings and therefore, life as a whole! Letâs take a close look to some different, so called âprimitive â or âuncivilizedâ cultures. We can ascertain so much from Aborigines, Native Americans, African tribes to name just a few.

Thatâs one aspect of these compositions, others are waiting to be explored by You, the listener...

About the songs:

Hiro Tanaka:
Heâs the son of a Japanese mother and a North-American father, jumping from a ship, where heâs imprisoned for attacking the really mean cook, near the Savannah coast. From that time heâs a victim of the civilization and chased by the authorities as an IAADA (Illegal Alien Armed Dangerous Amok) ending in ... read the book âEast Is Eastâ by T.C. Boyle! Itâs a tune in 5/4, but with quite a different approach: You donât notice it, because itâs so funky. We love to play it, thatâs a first take recording!

Dewnutfox:
Heâs a fox living in the Taunus Hills in Germany. Heâs really uncivilized and nosy and thatâs the reason he came to the meadow near my house, when I was practicing my bass guitar. Itâs not a real word, itâs a pun translating German to English: Dew means âTauâ and nut means âNussâ which gives âTaunusâ, the hills Iâve been born in and Iâm still living at. This one had to go through a tough and intense process during itâs arranging phase, but now it sounds so good. Ulf is playing his ass off on his acoustic grand piano and Jens is shaking the ground with his unbelievable drum solo at the end. He was afraid to be called a chatterer after that, but I know he is definitely not.

Martial Sympathy:
In the Tuscan hills Ulf experienced the contrary nature of sympathy and aversion. In some un- sober moments he learned about the goddess of love and martial habits. This was a real pleasure, however, it caused some clashing emotions. This song represents the conflict between a deep, honest sympathy and the pain caused by these feelings. You can hear it in the sweet, dark, dilatory pulse.

Homegrown:
This song has been written in Africa, inspired by the âPolice Orchestra Of Burkina Fasoâ, they are really grooving! It tells the story of some demons guarding a water hole in the desert near Ouagadougou. It starts off with a spacey minimal pattern played on my fretless bass, and it gets more and more funky throughout the song changing from a 12/8 Afro groove in the theme to more 16th note feel in the solo sections. Heiko is a master off dramaturgy, as You can explore in his percussion feature. The theme is played on fretless bass in unison with my voice, alienated by a vocoder. (BTW, this is the first time I use my voice on a record...)

Campanacci Delle Pecore:
Rehearsing on Racheleâs and Marcelloâs sheep-farm in the summer of 1998, in Tuscany/Italy, lead to this title, which simply means sheep-bells. In our rehearsing flat we could always hear dozens of these bells, day and night, which was a real inspiration for Heikoâs sheep-bell intro accompanied by hundreds of cicadas. This is almost a suite, it has so many different sections: a highly explosive percussion overture followed by a gentle bass/percussion intro, the bluesy Rhodes theme with a crying, distorted interlude by bass guitar, Ulfâs solo based on 3/4 and the driving bass solo in the end, fading into the blue Italian sea...

Sloblueblow:
Itâs a ballad of the 27th century, when we will have overcome the civilization and all people live in peace and freedom. And the human revolution has been successful in illuminating every being on planet earth. I tried to let my fretless bass guitar sing a song for You!

Collateral Damage:
This term is a good example for our civilizationâs perverted language. It means by accident killed people, and became âpopularâ first during the Nato-Yugoslavian war, when not Mr. Milosevic was hit, but hundreds of innocent victims. It tells the story of a garden party, âdisturbedâ by aircraft bombs ending in a disaster. Itâs dedicated to the Italian fishermen, injured by NATO Bombs found in their nets. This song is fast and merciless. Ulf is a painter expressing pain and doom in his distorted Rhodes solo. Listen to the dark colors he creates with his synth sounds.

Schroh:
Somewhat world music feel, with an abrupt interruption by IP-Funk. Schroh is a German word (maybe with a Jiddish origin?) which means gruff, brusque, raw or uncultivated- uncivilized?

Dewnutreprise:
Need a translation? Ask: hartmut@illicitpoetry.com
