The film Joe Versus the Volcano was universally panned by critics and ignored by most moviegoers. Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jackson Jackson was not one of those people. He saw the movie no less than three times during its theatrical run and proudly owns the DVD. Paseo Padre, the new CD release from Jackson Jackson contains a song called âMan vs. Mountainâ, which contains many central themes found within the aforementioned sorely overlooked film â coincidence? You decide.

Paseo Padre, Jacksonâs third release, is full of guitar-laden, hook heavy, punchy, melodic, modern alternative rock songs about love, faith, loss, doubt, and ultimately, more love. Fans of Foo Fighters, U2 and Switchfoot will find much to love on Paseo Padre.

"I'm actually not the greatest multi-tasker" admits Jackson, which seems odd given the fact that in the studio he not only plays the role of singer, songwriter, and guitarist, but also drummer, bassist, and recording engineer. âI guess I just like having my hands full!â Jackson sites the obvious inspirations for such a feat â Dave Grohl, Lenny Kravitz, Matthew Sweet, Stevie Wonder and Andy Sturmer of Jellyfish (who hailed from San Francisco, near where Jackson grew up). Also joining Jackson for the Paseo Padre recording sessions were bassist Christian Jung and guitarist Brian Vargas, who also currently play in Jacksonâs touring band.

As a Bay Area native Jackson's musical education began at an early age. At age six he inherited the remnants of his mother's record collection, and was participating in late-night jam sessions in his step dadâs living room shortly after. After learning the guitar, he moved on to the drums, began singing and writing songs, and eventually formed the band Shindig during the late '90s. The group garnered a spot among the top 24 unsigned bands in the Bay Area by BAM Magazine, netted a track on the magazine's compilation disc, as well as support slots for P.O.D. After a year and a half, several successful indie releases and an intensive live show schedule the band called it quits. Shortly before re-locating to the Portland Oregon area, Jackson took a few years off from band life, working as a session musician, recording engineer and producer. He also managed to release a critically hailed solo album titled âBusyworkâ, which visited a host of points along the musical map.

Paseo Padre, pitches Jackson's earthy, soulful voice against guitar-driven modern rock textures, adding in elements of riff-driven arena rock with songs like the albums first single, âSimpleâ. The loping, semi-detached guitar textures and laid back vocal stylings of "Sleepwalkingâ, on the other hand, are more the stuff of late night drives than rock stadiums, while songs like "Onionskin" and âLittle Girl Anymoreâ contain the stuff alternative rock anthems are made of.

Indeed, Paseo Padre is as out of the ordinary as it is imposing. Jacksonâs latest offering displays him at the top of his game - both vulnerable and detached, and most definitely ready to rock.
