Jennifer Bloomer - BIO -
Jennifer Bloomer has been performing her own heartfelt songs for over 20 years. Her music is a blending of pop, jazz, contemporary folk, and classical with soulful melodies and themes.
Growing up in the Bay Area of Northern California, in a family of classical composers and jazz musicians, Jennifer was heavily influenced by both genres of music. She began writing music at the age of seven, and began performing her pieces at various venues by age ten. Her early tunes were thoughtful and reflective, with a classical sound. At age sixteen Jennifer wrote her classical solo piano piece, âAndante De Amorâ, which she features on her debut album, Ebb and Flow, and which she performed live the year she wrote it at a composerâs concert at Stanford University.
While in high school, Jennifer was also very involved in singing for a jazz band, as well as singing and acting musical theatrical productions. For the next ten years after high school her songs began to take on a more jazz/pop feel, although a classical-sounding piece would come through now and then, such as âGreen Forestâ, written at age twenty. By age twenty-one Jennifer began recording some of her tunes, gaining her initial experience in the recording studio.
After spending four years away for college, Jennifer returned to the Bay Area in 1987 and joined the Northern California Songwriterâs Association. She began performing regularly at open mics throughout the south Bay Area. She won first place in an open mic competition in 1991 for âBest Performerâ while playing her feisty Latin jazz piece, âThis Man From Chileâ. She also began playing her tunes at festivals, bookstores, and coffee houses.
In 1992 Jennifer completed her first substantial recording project; a six-song recording of her then recent jazz/pop tunes, entitled Sitting Pretty. She continued performing at open mics, weddings, and coffee houses, and then in 1995 produced her second recording project; and eight-song recording on cassette entitled The Power.
By this time Jennifer was married and with two children under the age of five, so she decided to give the whole music thing a rest, and just focus on being a full time mom. But out of this time of ârestâ began her spiritual awakening, which led ultimately to the creation of a whole new wealth of songs, all of a spiritual nature. These new songs contained some of the jazz undertones, but were much more of a classical feeling, reflecting Jenniferâs earliest influences. She began performing her new spiritual tunes regularly at New Thought churches, as well as spiritual gatherings, throughout Santa Cruz County, where she was then living.
In 1999 Jennifer began working with producer/mentor Paul Wagner on her debut album, Ebb and Flow. Many of the songs on this album were inspired by the ocean, and in fact the sounds of the ocean are heard at the beginning and ending of the album. The title song, âEbb and Flowâ is about the still, steady, unwavering essence of ourselves amidst the ups and downs of life. All the songs on this album reflect this central theme, some claiming and affirming the spiritual knowing, such as âWhat Love Isâ and âLove Overflowingâ, and others expressing the outward struggle, such as âThe Strength Withinâ and âWhat Kind of Friendâ Jennifer created parts for many instruments, such as oboe, cello, trumpet, and Celtic low whistle, depending on the feeling of the song.
During the time working on this album and since she has performed in several full-length house concerts as well as given concerts at churches, fairs and festivals. She also moved from the Santa Cruz area to the Auburn/Grass Valley area, where she now lives with her husband and two daughters. She is almost done recording her second album, entitled âWho I Amâ, and is also writing a musical theatrical work inspired by the wisdom in nature.
