Jimmy Carl Black (drums) formed The Soul Giants with bassist Roy Estrada, vocalist Ray Collins, guitarist Ray Hunt and sax player Davy Coronado in 1964. Frank Zappa replaced Hunt, Coronado left and Zappa became their leader shortly afterward. They went on to become the original lineup of the well-known Mothers Of Invention, who continued on until 1969 with the additions of Don Preston, Bunk Gardner, Buzz Gardner and Lowell George along the way.

Jimmy had been in a group before this, The Keys, and they cut an extremely rare single in 1962: "Stretch Pants" b/w "Just A Matter Of Time."

After the original Mothers Of Invention broke up, Jimmy Carl Black formed Geronimo Black. They lasted until 1973, at which point JCB was out of the music scene. He returned in 1979 and has recorded dozens of albums since with many different groups. Many of these were done with The Grandmothers, who include former Mothers members.

"When Do We Get Paid?" is a welcome reissue of a decade-old compilation of tracks from his early Keys single to today, and features three bonus tracks: "Fever" (with the legendary Arthur Brown), "Lady Queen Bee" (by The Grandmothers) and "Blue Eyed Woman" (with The X-Tra Combo).

Officially licensed from Jimmy Carl Black, the recordings have been completely remastered and sound better than ever.
