"The dozen songs on "Far From the Real World" are suffused with a mature vision that comes from doing hard time in the real world. Only somebody who has stood on the peaks and fallen in the ditches, smelled the bouquets and been scratched by the thorns could make songs about relationships ring as true as Quealy does here."
Mike Boehm, LA Times.
In 1994, Jim was awarded Musician Magazine's "Best Unsigned Artist." Soon after, Jim decided to record an album and do some live shows. He went into the studio with some friends he had been doing club gigs with James Shattuck on drums, Mike Panno on sax, Greg Morgan on guitar, Ray Rosales on bass, and Mike Hamilton on guitar. The album was produced and engineered by Steve Wood at his recording studio in Laguna Beach, Ca. The Album, titled, "Far From the Real World," was recorded during the first two weeks of December, '94. The first week, the band went in each evening and recorded the songs live. The second week was for overdubs and mix downs. The album was released to critical acclaim in March of '95. Later that year Jim and his band played live shows to promote the album including sold out shows at the Galaxy Theatre, Santa Ana, the Troubadour, Hollywood, and the Coach House, San Juan Capistrano.
During the next two years, Jim wrote a bunch of new material which the band played live in local clubs. The songs were sounding tight and it was time to record their follow-up album, "Songs From the Stoop." This album was produced and engineered by Richard Bredice at his studio in Irvine, Ca. Jim and his band, The Noisy Neighbors, spent the next year laying down tracks with special guest artists: Richard Bredice, on guitar and Greg Leize on pedal steel, lap steel, and dobro. Jim wrote the songs about life out in the world. Most of these compositions were born from observing people out there on the street, and in the news, whereas, his last album dealt with more personal issues. This record was also released to much acclaim in the spring of '98. Another five-song CD, "Runaway," was also recorded during the "Stoop" sessions.
In 1999, Jim recorded an acoustic folk album in his home recording studio. All songs were recorded solo with guitar, vocals, harmonica, and piano. The album was titled "When You Run
In 2005 Quealy released 3 acoustic albums; Blueprints Vol.1
Vol.2 and Vol.3
After moving to Nashville in July 05, Quealy recorded the "Nashville Sessions" album and released it on Jan 1 07. These are a collection of songs, with a country tinge, that were demoed for other artists.
