Details:
David "Kooj" Kujat, born in Detroit MI. Began playing the piano in 3rd grade in 1971, began saxophone in 5th grade in 1973. Performed in bands and orchestras throughout grade school and highschool. Went to Oakland University in Auburn Hills, Michigan and studied Jazz Piano and Saxophone. Had great teachers like: Doc Holiday(sax), Sam Sanders(sax),
Pete Kahn(sax), Walt Schmanski(Trumpet), Charles Bowles(piano)
Also performed with Regina Carter(Violin) in the big band, at Oakland University.
Started in his first band with wife Maria(singer) in 1982 called "Warehouse" Went on to first professional act, "The Point"(oldies and rockabilly) in 1983 led by singer/guitarist/ bass Stew Francke of Detroit. Went on to "Kidd Lighning" in 1985 led by singer(Ron Gianetti) playing top-40 and rock and roll. Joined a band called "Playfair" (led by the late David Murphy), with his wife Maria in 1988. Played a variety of different styles of music. In 1989 Maria and Kooj left Playfair and formed a trio called "Take 3" with guitarist(David Rudy). In 1990 began the duo called "Sax Appeal" with wife Maria, that is still active today. Kooj sequenced all the music for Sax Appeal to perform to. Sax Appeal had a long time together until Maria(Wife) had vocal trouble in 1998 and took some time off for vocal rest, that is when a solo career began as "Kooj"
David "Kooj" Kujat wrote, arranged, performed and recorded CD "Glorious" in 1999. Both the Duo "Sax Appeal" and the one-man band "Kooj" are still making music today. Performs for many events, restaurants, fairs, clubs, art shows, weddings and all occasions. Music is all they do to make a living.
Kooj also has been recorded with the Brian Linne Band(CD Uniqueness in Me can be found on CD Baby). Kooj has also performed with the Johnny Wallace Project at the Motor City Casino in Detroit. The Mitch Albom show on MSNBC and WJR Radio in Detroit invited Kooj on the show. David has also started a tribute show to the great Boots Randolph, performing many of his hits.
