THE LEON ROOTS: Leonidas ¨Leon¨ Koronis was 12 years old when he was introduced to NYC dance music for the first time. Everyday, against his mother's wishes, he would go to the schoolyard across the street from his house in Queens. There, in awe, he witnessed scores of the neighborhood's older teens hanging out at the handball courts with this "music" blasting out of the triple parked cars there....tunes such as "Set It Off ", "Stone Fox Chase", and "The Mexican" would fill the air. All this would happen under the guise of a huge Funhouse clown face spraypainted in full color on the handball court wall itself. This was Rosedale, 1985, and Leon was hooked, forever.
He immediately got into the music and learned the skills necessary to work turntables. Although he stepped away from spinning (for nearly 10 years), he never stepped away from the music. One day fate brought Leon onto the dancefloor of Junior Vasquez. He was hooked all over again, and has been spinning ever since, climbing the ladder of New York's DJ's little by little. Tragically, his refound love and commitment to DJing was temporarily put on hold in 2000 when legal troubles took Leon away from spinning for over a year. But this time nothing was keeping him away. He returned home and picked up right where he left off, as focused and committed as ever.
To date, his resume includes some of New York's best underground parties as well as Miami's best clubs.... the Brooklyn Loft, Shelter, Groovejet, Cheetah, Crobar (Miami), Nerve, and Envy. But his favorite space is where he was for almost 2 years up until its closing at the end of 2005, Discotheque, NYC. This Sunday morning afterhours is the kinda party Leon says he was built for, and with an anti-industry way of doing things, he has now become a mainstay on the NYC underground house scene.
Abroad, Leon has spread into Latin America, bringing his New York rooted, underground sound to the European and Latin American high society there.
Now, at 33, with the breakout of his first CD and some singles released on his own label, Lost In House, he is ready to make the world his dancefloor... But his home in NYC will always be his true DJ booth.
Welcome home Leon.
