Two soulful and haunting voices, the lyrical, poignant, and literary songwriting of Orit Shimoni, with the versatile musicianship of sideman André Kirchhoff - these are the core elements of Montreal band Little Birdie. Joining them in performances are David Pearce on bass, as well as various fiddlers and pickers from the local scene.

Over the past two years, Little Birdie has built a reputation and following, playing shows in a variety of local venues ranging from small pubs and galleries to showcase venues such as La Sala Rosa. Nuances of bluegrass, the sincerity of folk and the tension of blues and rock have shaped the sounds of this band yet there is an originality that is hard to pinpoint a rawness that is at once idiomatic and authentic.

In the past year Little Birdie has been showcased on the CKUT shows Folk Roots/Folk Branches and Venus, where they were introduced as one of [their] favorite up-and-coming Montreal bands. The band was also a featured performer at the Citygrass showcase in May 2006, playing alongside such other Montreal roots and alt-country luminaries as The United Steel Workers of Montreal and Liâl Andy. In November 2006 the group released its debut album, Cinematic Way, produced by veteran musician Mark Goodwin of the band Lil Buck. Along with the Liâl Buck rhythm section of Robert Harris and Stuart Patterson, Goodwin introduced a dynamic blend of instruments to Little Birdieâs sound, the result being a record which is richly conceived yet still intimate and inviting.
