Local hip hop, rap music artist Terrance Callahan of Ponchatoula has
landed a role in the movie "Death Toll," production assistant Matt Keith
said.
The film, based on a true story and set in New Orleans was shot in
Baton Rouge beginning June 13 because many of the original set scenes were
destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Crews wrapped things up July 1.
Featuring Lou Diamond Phillips, DMX, Keisha Knight Pulliam and New
Orleans' own music sensation Mr. Magic, the straight to video film targeted
to be released in October, spotlights the brutal gang violence that the
city suffered through the early '90s.
"The day I got the part, I had a show in Lake Charles that night. A
friend called me over in Baton Rouge where closed auditions were being
held so that I could talk to someone about about getting my music on the
soundtrack. We discussed that matter and I read a few lines - and a few
days later they called and said that I got the part," Callahan said.
Excited about the project, Callahan's prominent role in the film as the
character "Billy Blue" is another side far away from who he really is.
He's hardly a thug, but "Billy Blue" is a gangster who's faced with the
violent challenges of excelling through the street ranks while proving
that surviving his struggles and staying alive only belongs to the
fittest, he said.
Callahan, a young, aspiring artist and 1999 graduate of Ponchatoula
High School, credits his determination to succeed and to be the best that
he can be as being fueled by the encouragement of his mother, Donna
Callahan Dickens.
"We (the entire family) all play a special part in Terrance's life.
We're so excited. I'm so proud of him," his mother said.
Although coming out of the gate on a different track, "Lil Cali," as
he's known in the music world, is now lengthening his stretch around
another bend. The pace appears to only be picking up with no slowing down
in sight.
Callahan seems to be getting a double boost at stardom with breaks in
both the music and film industry. Keith said he has already been
snatched up for the another role in a comedy titled, "Hood Hostages" that will
begin filming at the end of the July. Involved in a three-year music
partnership with the Yz Gyz Entertainment label, managed and executively
produced by Derrick Taylor and Tori Hogan and distributed by
Select-O-Hits Distribution based out of Memphis, Tenn., "Lil Cali" is looking
forward to the release of his third CD.
Anticipated to be released in October, his newest enterprise titled,
"Mr. Louisiana" aims towards yielding respect and solidifying his ground
that he has the talent to make his music standout and garner attention
the same as other seasoned artists of the down south music industry
while at the same time paying homage to the gateway pavers.
The 19 track CD blazes a trail behind his first two releases titled,
"Long Live Tha' Game" and "Bayou Classic."
With everything moving so fast, "Lil Cali" admits feeling a little
overwhelmed, but he guarantees that after a brief period of relaxation to
Miami his feet will hit the ground running with a promotional tour. He
vows to keep rising until he reaches the top.
Taylor citing that the performer faces a busy schedule ahead, adds that
the tour will definitely include stops across Louisiana, some parts of
Mississippi, Florida, Alabama and Texas, with his road manager Eric
Butler also known as "Beezie" at his assistance.
"Lil Cali's" parents are Donna Callahan Dickens and Leo Dickens of
Ponchatoula and A.C. and Carolyn Gayden of New Orleans. His grandparents
are Gladys Callahan of Ponchatoula and A.C. Gayden Sr. of Dallas.
