LYRICsings: A BRAND NEW DAY
BIO -
Thanks to the critical, radio and commercial successes of their
respective album debuts Simply Rhonda and Just Roz, Houston, Texas natives Rhonda McLemore and Rosalyn Brunswick-McDuffie have become two of the brightest soloists on the contemporary gospel music scene. It's the blessed fulfillment of the dream these two women have shared, nurtured and pursued since they became childhood friends.
In 2004, these parallel stars-in-their-own-right did the unexpected by harmonically, stylistically and spiritually converging into one sound, one soul, one word: Lyric. "We call ourselves Lyric because that's what changes lives," says Rosalyn. "It's not in the music, it's not in the beat, it's not in the rhythm. It's the words. Because we desire for the words that we say and the words that we sing to be straight from the Word of God and very encouraging and very uplifting."
On February 21, 2006, Canvas Records will release LYRICsings âBrand New Day.â Produced by vocal extraordinaire Chris Walker, co-written by Walker, Greg Curtis, Shawn McLemore and arranged/co-written by Lyric, A Brand New Day ecstatically mashes up contemporary gospel and traditional gospel with contemporary R&B melodies and a neo-soul shimmering vocal flow. The result is a new kind of spiritualized urban pop music that reaches out to saint and sinner alike.
"This album is not just for the Church," muses Rhonda. We want the secular audience. If the secular stations take up songs like
"Promise Land" and "When I Think", and it heals those who may be hurting and need help; hey let's do it. "
"We want to be able to reach the lost," elaborates Rosalyn. "There's no way you can reach the lost if you bang them over their heads with just one thing. You have to meet them where they are in the streets as far as landing souls and seeing people saved. That doesn't bother us at all."
While A Brand New Day's masterful fusion of inspirationally exalted
lyrics and groovealacious R&B-tinged melodies/beats and urban pop hooks place it firmly in the company of nu-gospel crossover missionaries Mary Mary, and Yolanda Adams, it's the unfettered emotional realness, familial conviviality and sheer joy generated by Lyric's mellifluous solo and duet extrapolations that lift it to a level that's absolutely special. "I guess it's just from listening to her and knowing each other," Rhonda modestly explains. "Knowing when she sings, she sings with a lot of feeling. And so do I. We write from experience or what we feel, so we feel better singing our own lyrics to the song." Rosalyn adds, "I sing soprano, Rhonda sings the mid and low parts; our voices complement each other very well. And we have enough of the same style to make it interesting yet enough different style to make it intriguing."
For Rhonda and Rosalyn, Lyric is the proverbial match made in heaven. "Yes, God put the group together," Chris Walker smiles. "He sent me a dream and I heard the girls singing together in that dream. So I approached them about coming together, joining each other and forming a group." The fact that the messenger had also produced and co-wrote songs on both Simply Rhonda and
Just Roz -- was a double blessing. "Both girls are powerhouse soloists on their own; I knew they would give their own testimony to the lyrics," says Chris. "I knew because of our and their interrelationships, I knew we would get in the studio and just have fun. I think that came across in the music, that we enjoy praising God.â
Rhonda McLemore and Rosalyn Brunswick-McDuffie have traveled a long way to become LYRIC. A Brand New Day heralds the beginning of a far more glorious journey for them and for usâ¦but that's all right. "Some of our motivations is that we know we have to reach everybody," declares Roz. "We want everybody to know that they can change, they can live a healthy life, that they can live a spiritual life."
"We want to give life lessons." We're not going to try to downsize
God," agrees Rhonda. "Once we go out to minister to the people, we want them to remember those girls came in and they were anointed and souls were won. Let the healing take place." Amen.
