16 MP3 Songs
SPOKEN WORD: Poetry, HIP HOP/RAP: Hip Hop
Details:
Many in her community herald her as their local âmotherâ of spoken word. But, this Jacksonville native is far more than just a poet. While Malikah Hameen has been writing and performing for over 15 years, it is important to understand that her words are fueled by greater forces. Fusing spirit, culture, revolutionary action, and words she has created a vital tool for social change.
Malikah Hameen has performed and done workshops in many of Jacksonville and Atlantaâs urban schools and featured at such venues as The Ritz Theater, Soul Release, Ninaâs Jazz Lounge, Project Row Houses, and Black on Black Rhyme just to name a few. She has been published as a freelance writer with The Florida Times Union, FemmeHorizon, Blacksonville, and various other publications. As the founder and artistic director of BlackFace Poetry Troupe she along with Dawn âKoffeeâ Dillard and Lizz Straight used music and poetry as a propaganda tool for social issues and could be found changing the vibration at many of the nationâs premier venues.
As a child of spirit and a student of both Iyanifa Faadisi Olaolu Olabisi (Queen Malika Sabah) and Babalawo Ifa Kayode Ogunsini (Dr. Ndugu Khan) she allows herself to be used as a conduit for the voices of our Ancestors. A strong advocate for the healing of African women and children she founded My Sisterâs House healing womenâs circle to address the unique spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of the women and children in our community.
Currently the FTP Movement Coordinator for the state of Florida and hostess of Jacksonvilleâs premier monthly culture night âOpen Cipherâ, you can find Malikah somewhere between a political education class, a sisterâs healing circle, and an open mic. In her own words she is âA change in your thought process!â So, let the change begin.
