Magen Mitchell was born near Dallas, TX in 1987. She began studying piano at the age of five and violin at the age of seven. She is currently an undergraduate student at Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. She is studying music theory and composition and plans to get her Master's degree in music. Magen plays cocktail piano regularly for local gigs, as she also accompanies many vocalists and instrumental soloists. The young composer was awarded the William Gillock Composers award in the year 2005. Magen attends school full-time, while working part-time at a call center in Dallas. She enjoys improvising on melodies that portray simplicity that are appeasing to the ear. She also composes solo instrumental works, choral works, chamber and orchestral works. These other compositions are contrasting in style to this particular improvisational collection; With her finalized compositions, Magen utilizes formal musical techniques of modern-day composers such as Maurice Ravel, Rimsky Korsakov and Johannes Brahms, while experimenting with techniques of atonality, but always falls back on her tonal roots. This album was recorded with the beauty of simplicity in mind.
