Details:
There have been many changes in the past year for Matt Williams: a change of scenery, a change in his way of life, oil changes, guitar strings, a couple of changes of clothes, a change in stage delivery and a slight change in the songwriting process, which for an artist is always precious and should always be constant. For the past year Matt has been a traveling songwriter, booking his own shows, driving his car, handling his promotion, setting up his stages, tearing down his stages, making phone calls, sending emails and slowly and surely, watching his progress. Not much time for sleeping. "I've seen a lot this past year and a lot of it has ended up in my songs and some of it stored for later. It may never come out but its mine. I earned it, with a little help from my friends, of course."
Since June of 2005 Matt has been doing the music thing, the road thing, as a full-time job. "Before, when I lived in Austin I always had jobs and was still able to focus on music you know, have a band and play a couple shows a week. The touring was just going to be for the summer but at the end of the summer I realized I could actually do this." This has seen Matt play in play in 16 states, play some of most prestigious rooms in America, expand his audience, make new friends, make enough money to eat and fill his gas tank and sell over 2,000 copies of his debut record, Lets Work it Out.
Matt moved to Austin, TX in 2001, performing anywhere he could. "Once I started my record I was able to get better gigs and play some actual music venues. Once it was finished, I played some of the best rooms in town." These included the Saxon Pub, Flamingo Cantina, Cheatam St Warehouse, the famous Antones, KVET shows at Hills Café, Oklahoma Citys Blue Door and a six-month residency at the New Braunfels Museum of Art and Music. Matt appeared on KLBJs Dudley and Bob show, KO-OP Radios ATX Live and Around the Town Sounds, Open Air Live on College Stations KEOS, and Austins Fox 7 News Morning Show.
Matts debut was also played on Austins KGSR, KLBJ and KOOP stations. Around Texas, his single, "Money Ive Spent", was added to 12 different radio station rotations. Nationally, he's getting played in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oregon and California. The album has been added to stations in France, Australia, Peru, Lebanon, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Album track, 'Love's Behind That Red Door,' appeared in Benjamin Haye's movie, "Patrick Mallard," premiering in April of 2005.
The record, co-produced by Matt and Scott Olivier, featured musicians who played with Aretha Franklin, James Brown, the Allman Brothers and Burning Spear. Some of Matts influences include the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Stax soul, Al Green, Hank Williams and Townes Van Zandt. "I really love songwriters who write quirky, interesting, yet catchy songs. I love the combination of a strong melody, a great beat and engaging lyrics."
