This is Dramapop. Think Aimee Mann & Sheryl Crow meet the Musical Rent...
11 MP3 Songs
POP: Power Pop, ROCK: Acoustic
Details:
With a voice critics describe as "distinct and passionate," Andrea Maybaum conveys a wide range of emotions through her intensely personal songs.
From aggressive rock, to haunting ballads, to joyous pop - Andrea strives for honesty in her work. Her interest in the arts also extended to the theater.
As a featured member of the European touring ensemble for the updated version of Hair, Andrea decided to use the freedom of expression that she experienced in performances in her own music.
And, you'll notice that she always sings barefoot. Even in rehearsal.
Returning to America, she immediately took residence in New York, a place where she feels close to the East coast individualistic spirit of some of the "modern troubadours" that have influenced her: Ani DiFranco, Aimee Mann, and Stephen Sondheim.
Andrea's first order of business was to assemble a group of musicians that shared her artistic vision. Like many before her, she placed a simple ad in the Village Voice, and began to audition prospective collaborators.
"These guys came in, and they looked like rock stars...real testosterone wanna-bes with long hair and tight jeans, but I wasn't enamored with any of them...Rich, however, showed up 45 minutes early and had to wait outside...he pressed his ear against the wall and when it was his turn to play, he'd already learned all my songs!" For the next two years, guitarist Rich Stefens and Andrea worked on the material that would eventually become Tribeca.
"We played every open mic and acoustic venue three and four nights a week in New York, and occasionally in Los Angeles, until we felt ready to record." With producer Lawrence Gelburd (Dash Rip Rock) behind the console, Tribeca, Ms. Maybaum's debut disc, was recorded in only three weeks in the summer of 1998. Soon after the album was mixed, Andrea began to put together a band for the purpose of recreating the album in a live setting. Tribeca was the first step in a promising career that continues to grow with each new song and performance.
A follow-up album, Cue The Sun produced by Brad Albetta and featuring her touring band, is now available. The first single, "Get In, I'll Drive" reached the Top 30 on the MP3 Pop Charts and reached the semifinals in an MP3 song competition.
A demanding schedule of shows, recording, and her recent acceptance into the INDIEGRRL community (an international collective of women in independent music) is sure to keep Andrea busy, and clothed, in the immediate future.
