BLUES: Acoustic Blues, ROCK: Roots Rock
Details:
Marty Nestor is the guy you see in smoky dives while gagging down schooners of warm Brew 66 and wondering why you don't leave, but you don't. The smoke burns your eyes and the beer makes the ash taste in your mouth worse, but there's something about the scruffy looking musician sitting on a funky kitchen chair on a makeshift stage that makes you want to stay. And you do.
There is a little Bobby Darin in Marty Nestor, you see, and not the Bobby Darin that we all saw and accepted but the Bobby Darin that was on his way back when his life was tragically cut short on the operating table. Like the Darin of that period, Nestor plays his music very close to his roots: blues, folk and rock. It is voice and guitar and harmonica mostly, with a little help from a few friends. No frills. Just music.
Of the nine originals presented here, the ones which catch the ear are those which utilize that bluesy-folk harmonica reminiscent of those mid-folk years beyond hootenanny and before rock. JimmyJohnJohnny adds a deeply resonant acoustic rhythm guitar to that harmonica to good effect, telling a story of hard times and worse luck. That same harmonica turns light rocker The Long Road Home folk-rock, a good touch. And then there is Tell Me What You Want, in which he has a touch of Leon Russell in his heyday.
The one non-original is a solid acoustic blues version of Jimmie Cox's Down and Out, on which Nestor sounds totally at home. Doug Vennard supplies superb acoustic leads on that and the other two tracks on which he guests.
As an example of what Nestor can do, this CD does the job. Like I stated earlier, this is a no frills project and, to tell the truth, that's the way Marty Nestor should be presented. Like he's on the couch in your living room or on that kitchen chair in that funky dive. That is where this kind of music thrives. I think he knows it, too.

MARTY NESTOR
His music has been described as "edgy as a jail house cup of coffee," and after a listen it's hard not to agree. Westford's Marty Nestor is an acoustic rocking original songwriter who enjoys making music as much as he does listening to others. Nestor is a 30-year veteran of the Boston music scene as a singer-songwriter-guitarist of the groups, Strider's Wrath, Side One & Downtwisted as well as performing as a solo artist. A clever lyricist that boasts a richly expressive voice to deliver his prose.
He has two Independent original cd's to his credit and writing his third to be released sometime in late 2007. A true folk-rock troubadour.Within his 30 year career he has worked with a number of regional and national acts, as well as producers Anthony Resta(of Elton John, Collective Soul, Duran Duran and Shawn Mullins fame) and Hirsh Gardner(of the band New England).
Always the professor of hope, self-right and human courage his new 10 song, self-tittle album will make you think.
From his original work with Side One & drummer producer Hirsh Gardner in the 80's or his more rootsy Americana styling of the present. Nestor brings the listener on a ride that you won't soon forget. He will stand and deliver.
