Details:
I was inspired to record this album after listening to 'Pink Moon' by Nick Drake. The use of different guitar tunings was, amongst other factors, one of the reasons behind Nick Drake's great appeal- he made the guitar sound different, fuller almost. On the 8 tracks which have guitar on, 5 feature different and unique guitar tunings. Having recorded a lot on cassettes to create a lo-fi sound previously, I was now more free to add different textures by using a portable recording device, and I performed using a layered recording technique.
The album is also given as a tribute to my home county, Bedfordshire- I was quite upset when I moved to university in the north of England and nobody there seemed to have even heard of Bedfordshire- a county in the same nation, right near London! This is a record for my home.
1) WOODLAND NOISE (0:34)
A brief walk through the local woods, birds singing, the atmosphere is set up. Field recording.
2) ON OUR STREETS (3:12)
A song written back in 2008 with lyrics from Karl Leuenberger. Slowly builds in anger, speed and intensity.
3) SELSEY BILL (2:30)
Selsey Bill, a point on the Sussex coast, illuminated in folk-like song, with there literally being a man, Bill, from Selsey, looking out over the sea.
4) BEDFORD TRIANGE (2:19)
A song about the death of Glenn Miller. Uses a unique guitar tuning to this album.
5) END OF THE DAY (3:32)
Driven by a pulsating metronome, an acoustic pulsating track.
6) CAST AWAY (2:36)
A reflective song, which takes advantage best of the extended chords which are available with the use of my unique guitar tuning.
7) KEEPER OF THE KEYS (3:38)
A love song, recorded on a distant piano, with the voice also lying distant.
8) I COME FROM BEDFORDSHIRE AND THAT'S OK (3:21)
A tribute to my home county of Bedfordshire, listing all the things I love about it. Features a trombone solo too!
9) GUADARFUI (2:36)
This song was written in a monastery, from a book I found in the library there about the travels of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin in Indian Ocean.
10) SWITZERLAND THROUGH A VIEWMASTER (5:08)
A spoken word track, based on when I used to use a Viewmaster to view old reels of the Alps which my grandfather had given to me. The story is based on travelling around the Swiss Alps with a beautiful girl. Uses audio from the Dads Army radio series, and two seperate recordings of 'Music of the Elements' a chamber music piece.
11) FLIGHT FROM BOMBAY (3:59)
When visiting Chamonix in France in 2008, I found a piece of red metal in the outwash from an Air India plane which crashed in the Mer de Glace decades before. This song is a tribute to the flight and the work of nature.
Personnel/thanks:
The Keynes- Kimbara 1970 Guitar, Conn 88H trombone, Bandmaster Cornet, Bentley Piano, Yamaha Keyboard, Progamming, Vocals
Additional credits (track 10): Rowland Sutherland- flute; Angela Crispe- clarinet; Ian Burdge- Violoncello; Gillian McDonagh- Percussion;
