Details:
THE MORRISONS-SOUTHERN SOUL

The Players: -

Phil-vocals and guitar
Ian-guitar and vocals ( and bass on This House Is For Sale )
Dave-bass ( all tracks except This House is For Sale )
Guy-drums on all tracks ( also keyboards on Town after town )
Elaine-backing vocals
Rob-keyboards on Southern Soul (the track)

The Background: -

All songs were written and recorded by The Morrisons at different times between 2006 and 2010 except Out Of The Blue and Town After Town, which were written around 1986/87 by the âfirstâ line up of The Morrisons and Captured In A Jar which was written around 1982/83 by Ian, Phil and Dave when they played in a pre-Morrisons band called Chapter 29 but all versions here were recorded between 2005 and 2010.

Butch Brooklyn was written by Ian as a tribute to an American podcaster called, funnily enough Butch Brooklyn who played The Morrisons on his podshow.

All songs were recorded, engineered and mixed in Ianâs basement by The Morrisons.

The Morrisons write and record a reasonable volume of material and the album came together when Ian sifted through the computer hard drive where recordings are stored and discovered various tracks which had not been previously released (with the exception of Southern Soul, Down To The River and Burning Light which appeared on the 3 track CDR EP released on Susy Records www.susyrecords.com). Having said that the version of Burning Light on Southern Soul is a completely different take with 12 string lead guitar rather than 6 string lead guitar and a slightly different arrangement. The solo on Down To The River on Southern Soul is also different as it is played by Ian whereas the version on Susy Records has the lead guitar played by Phil.

The Inspiration: -

Songs are generally written in a basic format with lyrics and music by Phil and then developed and changed by all the band members as they move towards completion so they are very much a âsum of the partsâ rather than an individuals own. There are no pre-conceived ideas or styles, basically all band members write their own parts around the basic structure and the song ends up where it ends up!

About Some Of The Songs: -

Southern Soul was a tongue in cheek nod towards The Verveâs Northern Soul title, Flowers On A Tuesday was yet another tilt towards a drinking theme (common to Morrisons songs), Youâre A Fraud was always a pop song that we were pleased with but due to itâs stand alone capo position on the guitar never really broke into the live set, The Man With Nothing Left was one of many songs that were recorded first rather than broken in live and as a result has never been considered in a set list, Down To The River started life in a band Phil was trying to get together pre re-forming The Morrisons and also featured under the title Great Water in another of Philâs pre-Morrisons bandâs called Jensen, Captured In A Jar was inspired by listening to a large chunk of Scott Walkers 60âs solo albums, This House Is For Sale is another recorded only song which remained un-finished for months until Ian (unusually) added the bass line himself so it could be mixed down, Town After Town was inspired by Ian tuning his guitar to an open G (after reading a music magazine article about open tuning written by the lead guitarist of The Only Ones) and playing barre chords with a single finger, the lyric follows another favourite Morrisons theme of travelling and modes of transport, Burning Light basically takes a poke at Morrisons lyrics in general with its deliberate travelling references, several versions of this song exist with different guitar solos from Ian. Danaâs Diary was inspired by a run of more observational people and character references in songs (see also Cranberry Street) which resulted from a spell listening to Ray Davies and finally like Town After Town Out Of The Blue was written around 1986/87 and was a staple in the live set at that time but never recorded during the many demo sessions of the 1986/88 Morrisons line up.
