âJustin is a gorgeous songwriter, full of sincerity and soul. His melodies gently pull on my head and heart. The new EP '5 Kinds of Rain' is awesome!â
â Stephanie Schneiderman, award-winning singer-songwriter
Justin Judeâs bones are showing.
The multiple-award-winning singer-songwriter is back with a stripped down, bare-all EP exploring heartbreak and redemption. With "5 Kinds of Rain," Jude returns to his songwriting roots, using only his voice, acoustic guitar and a handful of instruments to create a startlingly clear, intimate new collection.
After several songwriting awards and three years performing with a full band in support of his last album Truce, Jude wanted to get back to the essentials. For 5 Kinds of Rain, he tapped renowned engineer Brent Rogers, as well as Jake Oken-Berg on piano and Dylan Dean on violin, and drew energy from profound personal changes over the past four years, including the births of his two children.
ââ5 Kinds of Rainâ is a lyric from the second track, âRose Cityâ, and fits the songs perfectly,â says Justin. âSome rain brings gloom, and a despair that it will the never stop. Other rain is a long-awaited relief, a reason for celebration.
âThatâs what this album is about: Life is hard, and rain will fall. What kind of rain will you make it?â
With four studio albums, two producer credits, six compilations, national television placements and thousands of YouTube views to his credit, Justin Jude has established himself as an emerging singer-songwriter in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. He has been named:
âOregonâs Best Singer-Songwriter 2007â (Bite of Oregon Festival)
âFinalist, Songwriter of the Year 2009â (Portland Songwriters Association)
âBest of Portland 2009â â KINK-FM
Judeâs sophisticated songwriting has been compared to Josh Ritter, Amos Lee and Ray LaMontagne. At the same time, his vocal power draws comparisons to legendary singers Martin Sexton and Marc Broussard.
Jude has performed with Lisa Loeb, Erin McKeown, Marv & Rindy Ross of Quarterflash and many more national and Northwest acts, such as Stephanie Schneiderman, Tony Furtado and grammy-nominated Patrick Lamb.
Classically trained in piano by his piano teacher mother, Jude first picked up a guitar at age 13, mainly to impress the girls. Soon he was mimicking the solos of Cream, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen and Guns nâ Roses.
When his parents bought him an acoustic Martin Sigma guitar at age 15 â which he still plays live at every show â he began to appreciate songwriting. He wrote his first song for a girl he longed for at a summer arts program â but she had a boyfriend back home. âOldest story on earth,â he says.
By college at Brown University, Jude was writing songs non-stop, playing campus bars, and collaborating with bands and a capella groups. But it wasnât until 2004 that he made the commitment to full-time music, releasing his first full-length album, "Itâs Love Itâs Love Itâs Love." The album and its hit single, âAme + the Rain,â established Jude as a singer-songwriter to watch.
Jude released his second album "Truce" in 2008, produced by Rob Stroup (Tony Furtado, Scott Fisher) and featuring Stephanie Schneiderman, Chris Robley and Derek Brown (Eels). The critically accaimed Truce has appeared on national television soundtracks and Triple-A radio. The hit single âOut of Stateâ was featured on KINK-FMâs âPlug in Portland 2009â, featuring the best of Portland music.
Jude also collaborated with Stroup on the childrenâs record "OyBaby Presents: We Sang That at Camp", his first project as producer. The album is a collection of summer camp favorites, featuring Stephanie Schneiderman and Tony Furtado, that has sold over 24,000 copies.
Jude is touring in support of "5 Kinds of Rain." He can be reached at info@justinjude.com.
