The story of Mind At Large is not only interesting, but stretches back nearly 20 years. Its two members, Gary houck and Matthew engstrom grew up together in the minneapolis suburb of maple grove, minnesota just several houses down from one another. They became friends through a mutual interest in hockey and causing trouble throughout the moonlit streets of maple grove. As they got older they completely lost contact with eachother for about 6 years but still remained only a few houses away. During that period, unbeknownst to eachother, they both became musicians, and by some strange twist of fate, Matthew and Gary would soon be reunited.
One day as Matthew was on his way to his first gig at the school talent show, he noticed his old neighboorhood chum Gary Houck walking down the street with a guitar. Later that day they would see eachoth ers band play at that same talent show. They briefly shared ideas about music, but their lives went on as usual.
Several months later they ran into eachother at another talent show, this time a battle of the bands. Gary recalls, "I can still vividly remember sitting on the grass watching this band with a singer that i had known since i was 6. i was blown away by his voice and the bands songwriting. I accidently turned to my bands drummer and said.....I want to play in this band! I should play for these guys! I dont think he was too thrilled about that idea."
Later that summer of 1999, Matthew called up Gary and asked him to be the lead guitarist for his band Paradox. He was thrilled by this invitation. Fed up with his old band, Gary grabed his guitar and amp, walked down the street where they spent their younger years, and later returned home a different person with a different vision. Gary and Matthew quickly became friends again, this time through a mutual interest in music, art, philosophy, and the common goal of becoming the biggest band in the world!!
Over the next eight years they saw some of the biggest disappointments of their lives, most of the time together and about the band they shared. Failure after failure in numerous bands with a constant rotation of members, late night gigs for an audience you could count on one hand, several fights that ended in nearly two years of not talking to or working with one another, broken homes, severe depression, dropping out of school, homelessness........just to name a few minor setbacks. But somehow these two keep running into eachother in attempt to work on their current musical visions.
Now, in 2007, Perpetual Tomorrow Records has released their debut full length album, "Mind At Large", the first complete studio work by these two unique musicians. Gary produced the album and wrote and performed the guitar, bass and drums, while Matthew provided his stylish lyrics and voice. The future of this band may be even more unstable than the release of a new Guns N Roses album, but if its true that history repeats itself.... Mind At Large, and a collaboration between Gary Houck and Matthew Engstrom, could easily be around forever.
