Devils Creek Live at the Acorn Theatre, Penzance, UK

This CD captures a live performance of DEVILS CREEK headlining a concert as part of the 2011 Penzance Proms, on their return to the UK after playing the top spot at a blues/rock festival in Germany.

Devils Creek is a power trio in the best sense of the word, headed by guitar virtuoso Guy Rosewall leading a really tight and punchy rhythm section comprising bassist Tim Chapple and drummer Alan Ibbotson. The band plays mostly self-penned material, with flavours of classic rock mixed with the best expressive blues.

One of Cornwallâs great live music venues, the Acorn Theatre has an atmosphere all of its own. Café-style tables line the edges of the auditorium and people are settling into the balcony or rushing up from the basement bar. The theatre lights go down and the guys are on stage. The set explodes into life with âPoor Boyâ, a Devils Creek classic from their first album- great driving rhythm and a well-crafted solo from Rosewall. The sound is warm and slightly echoey;- live and full of attack, the band donât do much crowd banter but get straight on with the second song, the highly original âWorking the Chainsâ. This title track of the bandâs second CD starts in a bluesy boot-stomp style, soon to explode in a striding back-beat which in turn gives way to a heavy rock groove beneath some blistering guitar work perfectly in synch with Tim Chappleâs knife-sharp bass work.

A cowbell beat from drummer Alan Ibbotson introduces âJudgement Dayâ, a song selected for airplay on Planet Rock Fm by Rick Wakeman, for his âown collectionâ feature and famously described as âsounding like Free in the 1970âsâ with a tasty little drum and effects break in the middle. Taking it right down, the band then slips into blues mode with a brilliant cover of ZZ Topâs âBlue Jean Bluesâ. Cool, laid back and played with amazing dynamics-listen carefully and you can hear a pin drop at one point- a minute later it rocks on high! The crowd, which is made up of music lovers of all ages, some wearing Devils Creek T- shirts, really show their appreciation.

Picking up the tempo again, âProve Me Wrongâ is one of The Creekâs more recent compositions and a real crowd- pleaser. Thereâs a mix of 70âs guitar work with undertones of Sabbath interwoven with Americana heavy rock. Tight and tasty! Next up is âRule the Worldâ, a song definitely out of the metal mould with a rich guitar riff on the dark side. Check out Chappleâs rich rumbling bass line which drives the song from below! The crowd are rocking out and really showing their appreciation for good music played with a hard edge.

âYou Wonât Breakâ, introduced as a song about arguments, shows the bandâs versatility to produce highly danceable songs- this has an almost country influence yet drives along, with fans all picking up their air guitars and joining in with an amazing lead break.

The gig is rockinâ with a feel-good atmosphere created by this hard working 3-piece, who then launch into Gimme All Your Lovinâ, a tribute to ZZ Top which introduces another Creek original, âKokomo Trainâ. An awesome song; hot and steamy;-shrieking guitar and juicy fat chords with that powerhouse rhythm section pushing a solid beat. The crowd are jumping and nobody can sit still to this one.

As the session draws to a close, Rosewall delivers his homage to Jimi Hendrix. âHey Joeâ displays some inspired guitar work over a classic tune- a great version that surely the man himself would appreciate. The audience loves it. The set finishes a real delight for Rolling Stones fans, Jumpinâ Jack Flash showing just how a good pop song can be rocked. This great track certainly has the Devils Creek stamp on it, featuring an incredible middle section with Chapple and Ibbotson laying down a cheeky B52âs style groove. This was a great gig and the session leaves the crowd shouting for more.

--ooOOoo--

Definitely a CD that reveals why Devils Creek are one of the best British blues/rock outfits around at the moment. Catch the band live wherever you can. Their particular blend of sizzling guitar over rock grooves will get your toes tapping in no time, the perfect CD for a long motorway drive!
