ROCK: Instrumental Rock, ROCK: Progressive Rock
Details:
Mind Capsule is an instrumental rock trio that specializes in a heady fusion of abstract grooves, melodic riffage and dense improvisational soundscapes. Their sound blends the primal urgency of classic power trios like Cream and Mahavishnu with the moody psychedelia of modern art-rockers like Godspeed You Black Emperor! and The Mars Volta.
Primarily a live project throughout most of 2005-2006, Mind Capsule went into the studio in late '06 with producer and long-time collaborator Nik Chinboukas and emerged with The Space Between. Their first proper offering as a band, Space captures Mind Capsule at full force and firmly establishes that they are as formidable a studio entity as they are a live unit. The songs are meticulously layered and harmonically complex but still crackle with the restless energy and effortless back-and-forth that has become the bandâs trademark.
Stares, the opening rocker, offers a blueprint of what's to comeâ within its lean 5 minute running time it effortlessly weaves RAGE-inflected agit-funk, psychedelic blues rock and lush atmospherics into a dense melodic framework. The deliriously groovy, Larks Tongues In Aspic-inspired Soft Nine ups the ante, building from a few simple themes to an episodic pysch/prog journey that culminates in a finale of searing noise and exploding riffs. Introduced by a lush, repetitive B3 figure, Organism shows the band at their most controlled and hypnotic, with Robert Sadowskiâs lush melodics tracing thick spirals of color around solid, unadorned grooves from the rhythm section. The calm is shattered by the bandâs infamous reworking of Soft Machineâs jazz-rock classic Facelift, on which the composer, original Soft Machine bassist Hugh Hopper, lends his inimitable fuzz bass to the bandâs arrangement of the song (which, for the Canterbury geeks out there, also contains portions of Hopperâs Mousetrap and Noisette). The manic exuberance of Facelift gives way to the melancholy wail of Clockwork, a three-part mood piece that culminates in wash of cymbals, vibes and melodic bass figures. 7:34, the albumâs closing track, is a blistering 7/8 romp featuring extended improvisations and some of the bandâs most haunting melodic lines.
