Details:
Monty's career as a cowboy poet began with an invitation to appear on the program at Red Steagall's Annual Cowboy Gathering. He has become a regular poet on the Cross Timbers Country Opry in Stephenville, Texas, Cowtown Opry in Ft. Worth, Texas and at the National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration in Lubbock, Texas. Monty recites cowboy poetry at cowboy gatherings and festivals around Texas and was a featured performer at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Museum and the Cheyenne Cowboy Symposium and Celebration.
Marion Moncrief (Monty) Teel was born on his motherâs birthday in Tyler, Texas on July 9, 1962 to Marion Ray and Grace Evelyn Moncrief Teel. Monty excelled in 4-H in dairy cattle and livestock judging and showing and completing state winning record books. While in 4-H and FFA, Monty received the Gold Star Boy Award, Star Greenhand, Star Chapter Farmer, and Star Lone Star Farmer. He won three National 4-H trips to National 4-H Congress in Chicago, Illinois, National Dairy Shortcourse and National 4-H Dairy Judging in Madison, Wisconsin.
After graduating with honors from Sulphur Springs High School, Monty enrolled at Texas A&M University on Dairy Science and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarships. He worked on committees in the College of Agriculture and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity where he met several of his life-long friends. After graduating with a Bachelorâs Degree in Dairy Science and a Masterâs of Agriculture Degree in Agricultural Economics, he worked for the Farm Credit Administration as an examiner. He helped farmers and lenders through the farm crisis of the 1980âs.
Monty has been an agricultural lender in Fort Worth, graduated from the Southwest Graduate Banking Institute at Southern Methodist University, in Dallas, Texas, and has worked in the credit union industry. He currently works in the dairy industry as an auditor for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Dairy division. He is a mediator between dairy producers/cooperatives and milk plants. He has kept close ties with the working cowboy by helping his sister and brother in law, Bob and Tammy Carroll, on their East Texas cow calf operation.
