Adherents of philosophical optimism--or rockers in happy denial? Either way, the Atlanta based OPTIMUS CLUB is happy to release their new collection, THE SALMON SONG with the belief that the universe will improve.

THE SALMON SONG is an artful mix of rock romance. This retro hip collection features eleven songs written and recorded by Mark Harper and the equally pangloss group of musicians including
Alex McGill, Jeff Adams and Rodney Bell.

On the surface the songs offer simple perspectives on everyday happenings, but listen a little closer and you'll hear some grumbling. OPTIMUS CLUB is a minimal sound, not highly amplified, produced, or formal. Part Buddy, a little Don and Phil, hints of Velvet Underground, and some Nick Lowe. Music with a certain groove that's easy, pure, and sincere.

Harper has been a recognizable optimist on the Atlanta music scene since the early 80âs. Bands include The Bogues (supplying lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Ottoman Empire (with his brother Clay), and the BluVelvets (with David Michaelson formerly of the Georgia Satellites; named one of the best local releases by Atlantaâs Creative Loafing, 2004). Composer of the indie cult musicals Not Dogs Too Simple and The Slippery Ballerina, Harperâs style is diverse. The tenth full length CD release, THE OPTIMUS CLUBâs Salmon Song follows the critically acclaimed 2001 release of Box.

Adams, joined the band in 2004 while helming one of Atlantaâs most popular bands, The Lizardmen (voted critic's choice for best local rock group by Atlanta's Creative Loafing, 1998). McGill, stick man extraordinaire also plays snare with the now legendary Kenny Howe & the Yeah and the Knoxville power trio Smoke Bomb. Bell, also known as the lead for Sonoramic Commando, teamed up with Harper several years ago during the recording of Happy Motoring. Gritty hillbilly tunes, Harper liked the sound so much he invited Sonoramic to record in his VA Highland home.

For years Harperâs OPTIMUS CLUB has been one of Atlanta musicâs private treasures, eagerly consumed by like-minded optimists as something special.
