23rd and 2 is the debut album from local Austin singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Andrew Rosas. Content with a Telecaster or beat up acoustic, Rosas crafts luminous pop with a slightly rough edge. The opening number âLooking Outâ dives right in with the bright guitars and crisp harmonies that grab the ear. The lush title track â23rd and 2â follows as a powerful example of what great pop can be. The sound of the acoustic tracks harkens back to the dawning of power-pop balladry, âSay Itâs Youâ and the achingly simple âYour Concernâ ring with tinges of Chris Bell influence and others like the haunting yet hopeful âSouthern Hymnâ recall the simple elegance of George Harrison. The album is not without its rock nâ roll fervor though; âEverything That You Sayâ turns up the amps, kicks in the quintessential power-pop harmonies, and cues the Bonham heavy drum licks. The songwriting brings the record together with an encompassing sense of youthful innocence balanced with tenderness and maturity.

Various other musical talents also appear on the album. Rosas recruited his good friends (three of whom are in a local Santa Fe band Babelshack) Dylan McDowell on the drums, Westin McDowell on lead guitar, David Hixon on bass, and additional vocals by A.G. Kirby. Rosas went to Santa Fe in January 2006 and recorded four initial tracks. Those were â23rd and 2â, âAll Nightâ, âKeep On Movingâ, and âNowhere Fastâ. The success of those songs brought Rosas back that summer to record the rest of the album. Most of the songs were written prior to the recording sessions except for âYour Concernâ, âGrasp The Nettle, and âWestern Sceneâ (inspired by a local Santa Fe motel by the same name), which were penned while in Santa Fe.
