The beautiful reggae star from Yokosuka, Japan, Aya Higuma know simply as Aya is totally reggae-sized. Until she was exposed to reggae, Aya wanted to put her musical talent to erforming hip-hop and R&B. But Jah would have it his way. Reggaesize them Jah! Reggaesize them!
And so it is, that a beautiful young Japanese woman from the city of Yokosuka traveled to America to pursue her dream of becoming a hip-hop and R&B singer. This was after spending time with a vocal teacher and then attending Senzoku Gakuen Music University majoring in singing.
While performing in musicals and live concerts in Yokohama and Tokyo, Aya Higuma made several trips to America to study Jazz and R&B. Her first single âI Miss Youâ went on sale in 2001 on an underground music website. It was in May 2002 when Aya moved to New York that she embarked on a full time career as a singer. In 2005 Aya Clive Williams, publisher of WhereItzAt and was persuaded to explore the reggae music genre. It took some persuasion, - Aya was set on a Hip-Hop, R&B career but started to sing and chant reggae music anyway,
The music moved Aya to rehearse songs like âSukiyakiâ âBack to Lifeâ & âKeep on Movingâ all to reggae arrangements under the musical direction of Mike and Bouncer from the Rhythm Masters Band.
This early influence with a solid reggae band gave Aya the confidence she needed to perform reggae music.
Her major debut was made opening for the Messenger Luciano at Carib Night Club in New Rochelle, New York on July 15th, 2005.
This writer has seen and enjoyed many shows- but that show stands out as on e of the most inspirational and entertaining shows I have experienced. The opening acts set the tone for Luciano; Living Truth was at his best. Bouncer rocked the house and Aya Higuma making her first public appearance brought the fans to their feet. The rest of the evening was magical.
Ayaâs performance garnered her a place on the biggest outdoor reggae show on the East Coast â Irie Jamboree, 2005. Before that however Aya had to fulfill a contract to headline the Summer Reggae Festival in Union Square Park, New York City on August 28, 2005. Backed by the Rhythm Masters Band Aya entertained the appreciative park crowd with her repertoire of Reggae and Dancehall.
