Description:
Abiku is a Baltimore electro-punk duo.
14 MP3 Songs
ELECTRONIC: Industrial, ROCK: Punk
Details:
Bio:
Abiku was formed in 2002 as a four piece with keyboards, guitar, theremin, vocals, and programmed beats. Jane & Josh continued as a two piece after the first demo, to facilitate more shows and more touring. In 2003 the two moved to Baltimore from their native Philadelphia. Since then, they have released 5 CD-R albums and a split 7â record with Myles of Destruction on Worldeater Records. The 7â charted on CMJ and was number one on Philadelphia college radio station WKDU for three weeks.
Abikuâs latest release is Location, a full-length CD on Seattleâs Automation Records. The album was produced by the band, recorded at Red Planet Studio in Philadelphia, and mastered by Alan Douches. Abiku spends as much time as possible on the road. They have toured from Baltimore to the West Coast four times since the summer of 2004 as well as a short tour of Mexico. They currently average about 100 shows a year. Their shows range from basements to larger clubs to generator parties in the desert, and they have played shows with everything from black metal bands to noise bands to dance music acts. Location is about the places they have passed through and the places theyâve stayed in the past few years as a band.
Press Quotes:
âAbiku is a Baltimore electro-punk duo sent from the nether regions to make electronic-based music rule again. And it shall. One listen to Abikuâs combo of of vocal screams and synth squalls is enough to sell any fan of art-punk bands as diverse as Matmos, the Locust, and Skinny Puppy on their chaotic, yet melodic crunch.â

âTheir electronic mayhem is fantastic â something along the lines of The Locust dry humping Controlled Bleeding â with Jane alternating between spoken word rhymes and traumatizing shrieks.... first-rate job pounding out electro-beats and injecting noisy loops, creating an awesome assortment of metal-tinged industrial music. This is what it must feel like to be stuck inside an old Asteroids machine as teenagers violently smash the fire and thrust buttons.â
-Splendid Zine 12/29/04
âAbiku is perhaps even more bizarre [than Myles of Destruction], taking on an electronic video game feeling with a drum machine and totally insane sounding female vocals that range from a feeling of new wave goth to totally pained thrash/grind....totally unique and different, intriguing, almost flooring me with being amazing, but being just harsh and abrasive and weird enough to keep me surprised.â
