ââ¦He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God, many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lordâ¦â Psalm 40:3
The band began in the South Bay as a way for drummer Tim Vreeland to pass the time and express him-self through music. What began as a hobby for Tim steadily grew with the addition of longtime friend Mark Moore in 2001. After Chuck McGinnis joined the band in 2002, Crisis was born. After a year of playing the Los Angeles circuit, the boys decided to keep the band a three piece and changed the name to Aorist Tense. With Tim holding down the drums, Mark on the bass and Chuck on guitar and lead vocals the band was set and ready to make some noise.
The groupâs name, Aorist Tense, is more than just another band name. Aorist Tense is a form of Greek tense, which translated means: from one point in time through all eternity. âWe connect the name to Salvation,â says Vreeland, âif you accept Christ as your Lord and Savior you will have eternal life.â A surplus of drumbeats, flying solos, and soul driving bass fused with melodic lead vocals, beautifully orchestrated harmonies, and screaming backups define a musical assault that only Aorist Tense can create. With Christ at the core, this a band with their eyes set on something much higher than earthly fame. Driving behind meaning, direction, and a clear purpose, they are like no other and bring new a vision to the pre-conceived notions of Christian Rock.
In 2005, Aorist Tense earned enough money to set out and create their first demo recording. With Chuck McGinnis recording and engineering, the disc costs were effective and the result was âSmoke and Mirrorsâ a five track disc the boys were hoping would catch the ears of radio and industry professionals. The plan and the disc worked to perfection catching the ears of college radio and a new independent record label. In early 2006, the disc was released and Aorist Tense was offered their first label deal. Signed to Salvage Productions the band is now ready to take on the world.
The song âToo Lateâ from the âSmoke and Mirrorsâ EP is being released to radio and has been played on KROQ (Los Angeles), Area 108 (Las Vegas), X103.9 (Riverside), 91X (San Diego) and various stations throughout the US. âToo late was our second song written as a band,â says Vreeland. McGinnis says, âThe song serves as a warning towards those who have not accepted Christ.â Moore adds âToo Late is definitely one of my favorite songs to play, itâs just punchy and right too the point.â
In January 2007 the band finished up the recording of there first full length album âMy Soul Set Sailâ scheduled for a February 13, 2007 release on Salvage Productions. McGinnis says, âStaying up finishing the disc was the hardest thing he has personally done in musicâ. âMy Soul S et Sailâ has been a labor of love for the band. Full of uplifting lyrics and catchy rock the band is set on crossing there love of Christ with a mainstream attitude. âI see us being able to mix and play with secular bands and fans while keeping our focus and faith strong. I see us being accepted but well known for our walk with God, âsays Vreeland.
While âMy Soul Set Sailâ includes the hit âToo Lateâ from the Smoke and Mirrors EP there is more than enough new material to attract new fans. The disc includes the poppy, crowd favorite âCatch Meâ, the powerful hard driving punk influenced âUnwanted Answersâ, and the epic and title track âMy Soul Set Sailâ. âI love this song, it really dictates the emotions of the cd,â says McGinnis. Moore adds âBy far the most different and noticeable song. I still get chills when it gets to the end.â While Vreeland prefers to play âCatch Meâ live, he says, âCharlie really did a great job on this song. It was solely his creation and I had the privilege to add some to itâ.
In 2007, Aorist Tense members are looking to continue there quest to take over the world of music. With opportunities to open for more established bands, the band is staying true to there faith letting God guide the band. McGinnis says, âMusic is what I love, it never talks back or argues with you or tells you that youâre wrong. It is the best way for me to express my feelings and thoughts for God.â Vreeland says, âIâm excited and nervous about the future, but I also know God has a perfect plan for my life. I love showing people that Christians can rock just as much as or harder than a non Christian band.â Moore states, âPlaying music for a living while spreading and teaching the gospel is just the ultimate ministry for me.â Moore adds, âThis is what I want to do, I thank God all the time for blessing me with this life and this band.â
