Ladies and Gentlemen. The verdict is in. The debut CD of R&Bâs most highly anticipated newcomer, âBearâ of Port City Records, is a slapper! It has the best of everything that a well-rounded CD should have: riveting vocals, slamminâ beats and soulful lyrics and hooks that stay with you long after youâve indulged. So how is it that this incredible 25 year old has managed to stay beneath the radar up until now? The truth is Bear, otherwise known as Richard Ward, has been on the scene right beneath our noses for some time.

Beginning in 2001, Bear toured with consciousness hip-hop group âBlackaliciousâ (Universal) throughout the US and Europe as a background singer, opening for such artists as Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige and many other high profile artists. Bear confessed, âThat was my first introduction to the real business of music. Touring was grueling, but I knew then that this was what I really wanted to do and understood the stamina that it takes to mark your place in this industry.â It was also very apparent to those around him that it was only a matter of time before his distinct and powerful vocals would soon find their way to being front-and-center stage.

Long time friends and old roommates, award-winning producers Teak and Dejon Underdue of Hallway Productions (Ice Cubeâs 2005 release) teamed up with Bear to produce his debut CD, âThe Bear Necessitiesâ (due to release summer 2006). âThis was a true outpouring of our heart and soul. We held nothing back when it came to putting this project together,â said Bear. With features from âKeak Da Sneakâ several other hot up and coming artists, âThe Bear Necessitiesâ is going to knock the socks off of everyone by giving the audience a little something that we are just beginning to rediscover: real sanginâ! With a voice reminiscent of Aaron Hall and Anthony Hamilton, and a style influenced by Stevie Wonder and Usher, this self-proclaimed prodigy of Sam Cooke provides an eclectic mix of soul, street and fun.

Bear first discovered his own voice as a kid trying to âout-doâ his big sister singing a song. âShe was tearing some song up and I decided to show her how she should sing the song. I think I surprised the both of us that day.â Bear said singing was just always around him. âI just always remember my mother and grandmother singing constantly, everyday around the house. And they had beautiful voices.â Fortunately for us, the apple didnât fall far from the tree because his voice gracing our ears is nothing short of serenity. âTo have this opportunity to share this gift with everyone is a blessing. Itâs both very exciting and very humbling. I just want to make my family proud.â This dynamic singer has little to worry about because with a voice and charm like Bearâs, success will most definitely find him.
