On âFrom Bliss to Revolutionâ I spent time simplifying my music writing and recording process, making songs shorter, clearer and more to the point. I tried to use the least amount of instruments as possible in each song. Except for only one song, âDie Dame,â I used my acoustic guitar and keyboards for writing and recording. In âDie Dameâ I picked up my Fender Strat for the recording.
The base of my inspiration has always been the human condition, but this album concentrates on the journey from what was once calm, happy and peaceful to the more turbulent, disharmonic side of life. It is in this turbulent, disharmonic side where we often find ourselves and are re-born so to speak, hence âFrom Bliss to Revolution.â
Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave were a few major artists that had influenced my style in the production of this album. Others include Gary Jules and Damien Rice.
The song âChemical Godâ took several years to write. It is inspired by and dedicated to Roland Deschain, a character from the Stephen King âDark Towerâ series. Along with writing this song went my own experiences of being in the desert, particularly Joshua Tree, California. The desert is strange in that its unforgiving harshness conjures images of guilt, judgment and death, yet its beauty, stillness and purity offer a sense of redemption and limitless spirituality. The image I had for this song was an individual who was caught between these concepts while having undergone an hallucinogenic spirit quest.
The song âDie Dameâ is sung in German. My apologies to any Germans out there if I have mutilated your language. I was just having fun!
