Black Square has finished work on their second full length album, âOne Glass of Water.â The album features songs covering such diverse concerns as teenage homelessness, globalization, militarization, and the Japanese internment camps during WWII (the black patches worn by the detainees relates to the bandâs name). All the while accompanied by music that truly rocks.

Black Square was formed on Oahu by Josh86, Little Brian Kim and Nick Danger. Although the average band memberâs age did not reach twenty, their extensive experience in other bands helped them form a cohesive sound right away. Black Square began rooted in punk rock music with lyrics that attempted to raise consciousness concerning political, environmental, cultural, and economic issues. Josh 86âs superior songwriting talent quickly made them popular among the local scene.

Desiring to expand their sound they added horns to the band and moved in a more complex musical direction while retaining their social focus. Their first full-length album "End the Cycle," was released in the Spring of 2004. The cd still does brisk business in the Islands. The addition of the horns led to a sound that defies genre description. The band has incorporated their diverse influences, ranging from reggae to ska to punk, and produced a sound unique to them.

The abundant amount of venues in Hawaii has allowed the band to gig extensively over the last two years. Playing both all age, underground shows as well as bar gigs, the band has had the opportunity to develop as artists and hone a professionalism rare to a young band.

Black Square has had the honor of gracing the stage with bands such as Fishbone, Reel Big Fish, Pepper, Buck-O-Nine, Goldfinger, The Toasters, Hot Hot Heat, Left Alone, and others. Black Square has toured Maui, the Big Island, and is recently back from a very successful mainland tour in California and Nevada. Black Square currently consists of Josh86 on guitar, Nick Danger on Bass, Little Brian Kim on drums, T.R. on sax, and G-Bone on the T-bone, and Babyface McEvan on tenor sax.
