Details:
The Buck Mountain Band takes its name from the mountain in Grayson County, Virginia, near the
home of Bob and Sue. In its original incarnation forty or fifty years ago, the Buck Mountain Band had
as its core players Wade Ward and Charlie Higgins; aiming to play in their spirit, the new group formed
in 1999 at the Galax Old Fiddlers Convention, with Ray Chatfield on banjo and Dan Peck playing guitar.
Dan has since held the banjo spot, and Grayson County musicians such as Jesse Lovell, Terry Gleason,
Gilbert Suitt, Karen Carr, Jo Ann Shinault, Amy Boucher, Roger Wilson, and (from Patrick County)
Brien Fain have at various times played with the group. Larry McPeak, the newest member, brings a
whole other dimension to the band with his fine singing. Regular participants at regional fiddlersâ
conventions, the Buck Mountain Band has also enjoyed playing frequently for the fine dancers at
Applewood Music Park, in Cana, Virginia.
Bob Taylor (Fiddle) grew up in Oklahoma, taught Appalachian literature at Bucknell for many years, and now livesin Grayson
County, Virginia, in the shadow of Buck Mountain.
Dan Peck (Banjo) has been playing old-time music since he fell in love with it at the Brandywine Festival many years ago. He has
played with The Regimental Revellers, The Gold Hill Boys and Virginia Barn Dance Band.
Sue Taylor (Guitar) began playing the guitar in Blanche Nicholsâs famous kitchen sessions in Independence, Va. She has played with
Back Up & Push and the Grayson County River Rats.
Larry McPeak (guitar) has played bluegrass and bluegrass-gospel professionally for over 30 years with his brothers. He is also a songwriter whose songs have been recorded by the Seldom Scene, Country Gentleman, the Lonesome River Band, and others.
Debbie Larson (bass) comes to old-time music through her father (fiddle), grandfather (clawhammer banjo), and great-grandfather (fiddle). When not rescuing animals from the pound or dump, she is Director of Music at the Wytheville (Virginia) Presbyterian Church.
