The Story of Cricket Spin:
________________________________________________________________
From a secluded basement in Brooklyn, an assemblage of folk singers, punk rock kids and classical musicians come together under the collective name of Cricket Spin. Fueled by a mixture of red wine and brightly colored sweets, the group creates lush arrangements, adorned with orchestral swells and thoughtful melodies. Each song is built upon humble and intimate folk structures. Cricket Spin's live performances consist of six to ten players weaving rock guitars, piano and woodwinds to create a symphony of bipolar pop music.
The Story of "You Are My Home":
________________________________________________________________
An early February sunset paints the first strokes of darkness upon the light pink siding of 33 Rundel Park. The yellow glow of Rochester streetlights seeps through the carelessly hung bed sheets that serve as curtains. This low light reveals a bedroom, under a canopy of suspended skeleton keys and silk birds. This is where âYou Are My Homeâ was born.
Cricket Spinâs debut full length âYou Are My Homeâ was released in late January 2006 in Brooklyn, but itâs beginnings stretch back nearly two years to the spring of 2004. All the songs were composed in Rochester, when Cricket Spin was in its infancy, then a Ben Yonda solo project, far from the current full band lineup. To bring the album to life, Yonda enlisted the help of close friends from many Rochester bands. The record features appearances by members of The Hue of Two, Tamiroff, Hedaya, The Scarlets, Meiux and Proud Simon.
âYou Are My Homeâ explores the cycle of destruction and rebuilding after separation. It deals with the search for new identity in solitude, the mental and emotional damage of infidelity, and the yearning for rebirth. Through the dark lyrics, there are however faint glimmers of hope, hints of a sunrise just over the hill. The instrumentation is quite varied, ranging from the rich violin, and piano of âMurdering Hugâ to âAntidoteâ, which features timid whispers over acoustic guitar.
The tracking was done at 158 Berkeley Street by Brian Keenan, front man for the band Proud Simon. The album was put on hold in the Summer of 2004 when Yonda and Keenan finished design school and left for two months in Europe. Shorty after returning to the country, the two would move to Brooklyn. This is where the album would finally see completion. The final vocals were done at Yondaâs apartment on South 3rd Street. After Keenan finished mixing the new vocals, it sent down to Silver Sonya in Arlington, VA, where it was mastered by TJ Lipple of the band Aloha. Brooklyn Illustrator Marge Farmer did the artwork. The album was self-released and is available for purchase at the bandâs website (http://www.cricketspin.com).
Cricket Spin is currently in the studio working on their second album, âGrains of Salt, Grains of Sandâ, which is set for a summer release. Look for Cricket Spin on their July 2006 US Tour.
