Bio

Paul Berget studied lute with Diana Poulton at the Royal College of Music in London, where he also studied with acclaimed lutenist Nigel North.

He has appeared on Broadway as an actor and lutenist in a musical production of âCyranoâ starring Christopher Plummer.

Other early music collaborations include the Rose Ensemble, Ensemble Polaris, the Minnesota Lute Quartet (MiLQ), Minstrelsy! and performances with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

His music has been heard in the Twin Cities area at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, the Children's Theatre, and more recently in the Guthrie Theatre's production of âAs You Like Itâ.

Recently Paul has been performing as the lutenist in the baroque ensemble: Sprezzatura.

In addition to playing early music, he has also performed in a variety of other musical styles: modern classical and steel string guitar, and popular music.

Notes

JS Bachâs Lute Suite #1 in e minor (BWV 996) was most likely composed for the âlautencembaloâ a kind of gut strung keyboard designed to imitate the sound and mannerisms of the German baroque lute. Unfortunately, the music does not convert easily to the d minor tuning of the lute most commonly used in Germany during Bachâs day. For this piece Iâve chosen instead to use a ten course renaissance lute which in the key of g minor seems to lie more naturally on the instrument.

For the first two cello suites (BWV 1007&1008) Iâve returned to the more normal 13 course baroque lute. In these I have chosen to use the transcriptions of the late Gusta Goldschmidt making only a few of my own changes.

Thanks for listening,

Paul
